Śrī Śrī Guru Gaurāṅgau Jayataḥ Chīṇḍa kī Ḍhāṇī 08-08-2008 Why does the practitioner not develop taste for chanting the holy name? The chanter of the holy name does not develop the taste for chanting the holy name of Lord Hari because his body, mind and words keep on running towards the sense objects. The chanted does not know that these sense objects are full of a fiercely dangerous poison called halāhala. The more you drink the nectar of sense gratification, more that poison will affect your body, mind and speech. Moreover, the thirst for the objects for sense enjoyment will increase further and further. When the poison will pervade the body and the mind, even the semblance of the nectarean love for Bhagavān and His devotees would be invisible there. Just take the example of liquor. When a drunkard sits down to drink liquor, he is never pleased with liquor. He will keep on drinking bottles after bottles. Finally when he is fully intoxicated, losing consciousness, he falls down in the dirty sewage. Then he does not know whether a dog is urinating upon him or someone is abusing him. Same is the state of other objects of sense enjoyment. More you enjoy the sense objects, more your thirst becomes acute. You keep on experiencing the lust, anger, greed and infatuation. If a little bit of lust, anger, greed and infatuation pervade the mind, the thirst of the senses becomes more and more acute. There is no question any reduction in this thirst. This will certainly destroy the body and mind. What ignorance! A dog keeps on licking a dry piece of bone by its mouth. Is there any blood in that piece? It is only relishing the taste of the blood that is oozing from its own gums. Is this its auspicious (good) understanding? Same is the condition of every human being. Thinking the sense objects to be the nectar, he keeps on chasing them. For this reason alone, the chanting of the holy name of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the devotees and the Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot attract his mind. No question of developing the taste for the holy name arises when the mind is not attracted the holy name. Then the devotees repeatedly complain, “How come our mind is not attracted the holy name of Lord Kṛṣṇa? How can we apply our mind in chanting the holy name? Kindly tell us.” Just tell me, is this not a matter of great foolishness? Oh my brother! The plate consisting of many types of delicious sweets and spicy foodstuffs is kept before you; however you alone have to eat. You alone have to put the morsels in mouth by your own hand. It is right to think that the guide or instructor spoon feed you? This is the carelessness (apathy) of the sādhaka (practitioner). One cannot advance on the path of devotion by exhibiting such carelessness or apathy. You may just waste your valuable time by making up stories and excuses. You will not achieve anything substantial. O loving devotees! Even if you are absorbed in sense gratification, at least do what I recommend. Then, these objects of sense gratification will leave you automatically. You may inquire, “O ocean of mercy! What shall we do?” At least try to hear the holy name of Lord Kṛṣṇa by your ears. The divine spiritual master has planted in your ear the seed of the holy name of Hari (hari-nāma). As you listen to the hari-nāma while chanting sweetly, that seed gets deposited into the soil of the heart. After a few years, this seed will certainly sprout. On sprouting, it will grow further. On becoming a big tree, the blooming flowers and fruit will adorn it. Then, you will start relishing the happiness by those flowers and fruit. When you start experiencing happiness in chanting and hearing hari-nāma, the external (outward, ostentatious) happiness of the sense objects offered by the illusory potency (māyā) will perish and disappear. The happiness of chanting and hearing is transcendental and uncommon by nature. Now you obtained the ocean of the happiness. Nowhere in the innumerable universes, shall you find the happiness that is as tall and great as this happiness. O loving devotees! Please store in your heart, how one receives this happiness simply by hearing the holy name of Lord Kṛṣṇa through the ears. For example, if I delegate some task to someone. “O brother, this is an essential job. Go to such a location, do this work and come back.” However, he had kept his mind in some other unnecessary affairs. Therefore, he told me externally, “Fine. I will do that work for sure.” However his mind was wandering somewhere else. Therefore, he did not hear my words attentively. However when he was returning, he had one worry. “That gentleman had told some work. I did not hear properly. What should I do now? That gentleman is my very dear friend. Now a great difficulty has arrived. If I do not do his work, my life will go to a ditch. I cannot even live without him.” Now tell me? What a loss a person suffers or will suffer, by not hearing the instructions properly. Similarly, if does not hear the holy name of Lord Hari by the ears, the human form of life, which one has received by the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, will be simply wasted. One can never estimate the degree of this loss. Some period of life is already over and even the rest is also elapsing. On hearing the holy name of Lord Hari by the ears, some time later the seed sprouts and will come out in the form of the plant. That plant will be – the body of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. There is no need of any evidence in that which is experienced directly. Anyone can practically experience this. One can understand this topic better through the following example from the mundane world. Look how a farmer plants the seeds. When he is tilling the land with the plough, he keeps on dropping the fistful (palmful) seeds in the pipe. The plough is pulled forward by the oxen. Seeds keep falling through the pipe into the ditch (trench). When the pipe moves on the soil, the seeds get buried in the soil. Within five or six days, the seeds inflate due to the dampness in the soil and the sprouts can be seen over the surface of the soil. After about 120 days, the plants grow to the heights of 6 to 7 feet and the ear of corn grows the top. On seeing that, the mind of the farmer experiences a boundless joy. He begins to dance. However, seeds that fell on the sides instead of the trenches cannot sprout, because they were covered with neither soil nor dampness. Fallen outside the trench and exposed, the ants and birds devour these seeds. Same is the destiny of the holy name of Lord Kṛṣṇa that is not heard. Unheard holy name disperses in this material world. Although it does not get destroyed, nevertheless it does not give the fruit of love, which is transcendental. It will give the material fruits – such as the economic development, religiosity, and sense gratification. The unheard holy name will not grant the lotus feet of Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, instead it will rather fulfill the material desires. In other words, one will not be able to cross the ocean of birth and death unless one hears the holy name that one is chanting. Therefore, until and unless, no sounds resounds in the art, until then one will not get the benefit of that sound, whether that is the material sound or the spiritual sound. Therefore, one will have to utter the holy name and pour that utterance in the ears, and then only one will obtain something some thing auspicious. Let us clarify this topic through an example. When one abuses someone, then does he do so the mind only? Rather he abuses aloud. Then only those invectives agitate the heart by entering it through the ears. Causing the anger to rise, it makes a person fly into a temper. He can now even take the life of the abuser. If this highlights the power of the material or mundane sound, who can even imagine the power of the holy name of Lord Hari. Now just think deeply with your brain. One material sound (invectives) raked so much havoc. However hari-nāma, the holy names of Lord Hari, is a spiritual sound that bears an unlimited potency. What it cannot do? Hearing the invectives caused the anger to rise. What would one receive when one hears the holy names? Answer is “the topmost love of Godhead.” Now, you should have clearly understood why one must utter the holy name loudly and let it enter the ears. You shall start perceiving the benefit after some time. My divine spiritual master had ordered in the year 1966, “Chant hari-nāma sweetly and listen by ear.” sādara sumarana je nara karahiṁ bhava vāridhi gopada-iva tarahiṁ “The human beings, who chant and listen the holy names of Lord Hari with honor and respect, can cross the ocean of material existence, like crossing the water accumulated in the hoof-print of a cow.” For this very reason, Śrī Gaurahari made His eternal associates preach of the loud congregational chanting of the holy names of Lord Hari. Your well-wisher, fellow-traveler (wayfarer) on the path of eternity, the most fallen among the human beings, lower among the lowest, Aniruddha Dāsa, Chīṇḍa This letter must be read to my instructing spiritual master Śrī Niṣkincana Mahārāja. Note: O dear devotees of Lord Hari! Please pay attention. None hankers for the Supreme Lord from one’s honest heart. Then how can one develop the taste for chanting the holy names. This means, one does not possess the real knowledge yet.
