En su peregrinaje la acompaña Hécate, la diosa de las Encrucijadas (o Anciana Sabia que con la Doncella y la Madre forma la Triple Diosa pre-patriarcal), Vestida como una simple mujer entre los mortales encontró morada en el palacio del Rey de Eleusis, Keleos, y su mujer Metaneira. Esta petición no fue satisfecha hasta que Zeus ordenó a su hermano Hades, a devolver Perséfone a su madre. Madre e hija volvieron a el Olimpo, pero desde entonces Perséfone tenia que pasar un tercio del año con su esposo HADES en el tartaro en el mundo de los muertos ya que en su estadia habia comido frutos de ese mundo . Cuando lo hacia, el invierno reinaba sobre la tierra, cuando Perséfone volvía a la Tierra en primavera, el mundo vegetal despertaba con flores y frutos nuevos. Antes de que Demeter volviese al Olimpo, dio a los reyes de Eleusis, Keleos y Triptolemus, instrucciones para celebrar los ritos en su templo. Estos eran preceptos secretos, misterios para ser guardados. Divulgarlos o profanarlos podía ser castigado con la muerte. Apreciando el propicio final del drama de Eleusis, Demeter dio a Triptolemus, el primer iniciado de Eleusis, una rama de trigo y encomendó instruir a la humanidad en la agricultura. En la antigua Grecia, unos días antes del equinoccio, ante la llegada del otoño y la primavera eran celebrados los Misterios Eleusinos.
