The shift within the human body is such that it is more conducive for sadhana, for setting goals. It is the time when the farmer begins to plough the land; when the yogi begins to knead this piece of earth the body that he is privileged to carry . It is at this time, many thousands of years ago, that the magnificent eyes of the Adiyogi fell upon human beings. In yogic tradition, Shiva is not worshipped as a god. He is the Adiyogi, the first yogi, and the Adi Guru, the first guru, from whom yogic sciences originated. The first full moon of Dakshinayana is Guru Pournami, when the first guru was born and he started teaching the saptarishis, his first seven disciples. The worlds first yoga programme happened on the banks of Lake Kantisarovar, a few kilometers beyond Kedarnath. When we say `yoga, we are not talking about twisting your body or holding your breath. We are talking about the very mechanics of life and how to take you to your ultimate possibili ty. This phenomenal dimension of human consciousness, or the possibility of the indi vidual becoming a window to the universal, was revealed on this day . Guru Pournami signifies one of the great est moments in the life of humanity . This is the day on which Adiyogi opened up this phenom enal possibility: that a human being can evolve beyond all limitations set by his physical nature, if he is willing to strive. This predates all religion. The question of whether people were really so sophisticated at that time is irrelevant because this did not come from a certain civilisation or thought process. This had nothing to do with what was happening in those times. It was just an outpouring of an inner realisation. You cannot change a single thing even today because he said everything that could be said in such beautiful and intelligent ways. You can spend your lifetime trying to decipher it. This is about transcendence and liberation, a possibility that human beings never knew. It does not matter what your genetics are, who your father was, or what limitations you are born with or have acquired, you can transcend all of that, if you are willing to strive. In Indic culture, Guru Pournami was always recognised and celebrated as the day when new possibilities opened up for the human species. Why isnt Guru Pournami a holiday? Why should Saturday and Sunday be holidays? These have become social conventions; they have no existential relevance. But the full moon and new moon (Pournami and Amavasya) have existential relevance. As everyone knows, on these days the very oceans are rising; 72 % of the human body being water, there is an upsurge in the human system itself. So these are the days, traditionally, on which work was suspended, and these were made use of for inner transformation and wellbeing. It is time that a holiday is on a day that people can make use of to break from work that they do for survival and focus on dimensions that matter for ultimate wellbeing. At least, Guru Pournami should be a holiday , so that people are reminded of its profound significance.
