Interview. -Tell me please dear Rafik, how and what impacted u to become a sculptor ? - In our family the most expansive and valuable gift is fatherland. I grew in patriotic soul family, hearing stories about Armenian heroes. And once when I was little boy I heard a story about Andranik the general. I return home impressed with his heroism . I found a piece of stone and tried to depict his face on it. I really worked hard trying to give a breath to my creation. Same I do now.. -Who can be the reason of your inspiration? -I love my wife, my grandsons, and my children, They all are in my mind and heart, The same I say about my parents. -Wood carving needs not only mental but also physical power. How can you manage to combine imagination and thought and power? I think that cosmos give me power and energy. If cosmos for someone is chaos , for me the place of power . infinite space of energy , place of atoms. For me it is… Life with clear rules. Life with immortal idea. This helps me to open human beings’ spiritual meaning. -Are you anxious about your heroes, for example when Pygmalion made Venire he fall in love with it? -NO, Of course they all are close to me , I have never sold my heroes , because I want to open a gallery for my and tourists who visit my house to see them. I would like to introduce my native land to all of them .I live in Haykavan village which is in Armavir district and there are places of ancient Armenian history about Urartu. -When you feel that your sculpture is done? -I always return to the past. The main theme is genocide. I protest and transfer my fallings to wood. One of my heroes is Komitas . His face in which you can see his mental disorders, his felling when he saw all that vandalism, I carved wheel in the back side of his face which is the sign of that awful days , which has gone but steel let its trail and in the middle of the wheel is cross the symbol of faith, salvation of my nation. The other symbols are mount Ararat and Noah’s ark. Also I return to source telling the story about people who saved Bible wrapped in bundle. -When you create your best work will you continue to work ? -YES! Life is cration. I must keep this power of beauty in my garden and studio. That is my will.
