ועוד כנס איכותני ב 2015 הפעם בקנדה, מתאים בעיקר לסוציולוגים We invite you to join us for the 32nd Annual Qualitative Analysis Conference: The Craft of Qualitative Inquiry. We return this year to Brescia University College at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada, June 24 to 26, 2015. Like any craft, as Alford argues, the art of “[c]ombining theory, method and evidence… must be learned in practice” (1998: 19). This is our continual challenge as qualitative researchers—to ensure that we create worthwhile research questions, collect useful data in an ethically sound manner, offer a cogent analysis of the data, and (re-)formulate useful theoretical and applied ideas. As practitioners of qualitative inquiry, we call on you to explore qualitative inquiry as a craft, emphasizing the experiential dimensions of doing qualitative data collection and analysis. We are eager to receive papers that consider the processes and stages of qualitative inquiry, including, but not limited to: 1. Developing a research project 2. Handling ethical dilemmas 3. Gaining and maintaining access 4. Collecting data 5. Analyzing and coding data 6. Leaving the field 7. Disseminating findings 8. Teaching qualitative methods In revisiting the experiential dimensions of your qualitative research, consider questions such as: What were your first thoughts when you started doing your research? How were the personal aspects—e.g., managing emotionality, confronting reservations—and professional dimensions—e.g., accessing funding, working within a bureaucracy—of your research dealt with? What obstacles did you encounter? How did you overcome them? What lessons did you learn? What important decisions did you make? What would you recommend? This year’s theme also encourages debate about qualitative inquiry’s craft-like features. What is it that makes the approach a craft? What do we gain and lose by conceiving of it as such? In line with this year’s theme, we anticipate developing an edited volume based on researchers’ experiences with the actualities of doing qualitative research. In developing your paper for the conference, you might also consider submitting your work for this volume. A separate call for papers will be sent out and posted on the Qualitatives website. While this year’s theme highlights the experiential dimensions of qualitative inquiry, we encourage submissions from people conducting qualitative research and interpretive analysis more generally. Submissions from novice and experienced researchers are welcomed. We will again be hosting a series of sessions devoted specifically to undergraduate student research. Please advertise this opportunity to undergraduates that might be interested in presenting their qualitative work. There will be more announcements regarding Keynote and Featured speakers, and special sessions to follow. Abstracts can be submitted online at qualitatives.ca/submit-abstract. If you have any questions, please contact us at thequalitatives@gmail. Abstract submission deadline: Friday, October 24, 2014. As many of you are aware, we require a strong submission of abstracts to use in a funding application to SSHRC, which is used to support the conference. More important, the conference is only as successful as the papers presented!
