(1) On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may ALLAH be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of ALLAH (peace and blessings of ALLAH be upon him) said: ALLAH (mighty and sublime be He) said:Pride is My cloak and greatness My robe, and he who competes with Me in respect of either of them I shall cast into Hell-fire. [Abu Dawud (also by Ibn Majah and Ahmad) with sound chains of authority. This Hadith also appears in Muslim in another version.] THE DISEASE OF PRIDE The disease of pride and arrogance deletes all traces of goodness and piety. This is the worst vice in causing havoc to Deen and a regrettable disease to have for the followers of this perfect and exalted religion. It launches a direct attack on beliefs and principles. If ignored and overlooked for sometime it becomes fatal and incurable, and gives rise to other spiritual maladies and vices, which are no less than four in number, as, mentioned below: 1. Being deprived of truth and truthfulness. The heart becomes blind to the verse dealing with knowledge about ALLAH. It is a very grievous vice in which the mind of a man becomes dull and impervious to the understanding of Deen. ALLAH has said in the Holy Quran: “I shall turn away from My revelations those who show pride in the world wrongfully.” (7.146) “And in this way ALLAH does put a seal on every arrogant disdainful heart.” (40.35) “Certainly He does not love the proud ones.” (16:23) It is narrated that Hazrat Moosa asked exalted ALLAH: “Oh my Lord! Who is the most deserving of your wrath and displeasure?” ALLAH Ta’aala told him: “ It is he whose heart is filled with pride and his tongue is filthy (i.e. Abusive), his eyes are devoid of shame, his hands are miserly and he is of bad conduct and character. 2. ALLAH will put the proud to disgrace and ill-repute (dishonour) in the Hereafter. Hazrat Hatim Asam (rahmatullahi alaihi) has said: “Do not die in a state of pride, greed and arrogance.” ALLAH does not cause the proud fellow to meet his death unless he is disgraced and dishonoured by his own family, relatives and servants. In the other words, pride and grandeur are two exclusive attributes of ALLAH, which none is allowed to apply and ascribe towards himself. It is imperative to refrain from such a dangerous and deadly calamity which leads to loss of knowledge of ALLAH, inability to understand the commands of ALLAH, His displeasure, disgrace in this world and the Hereafter and painful torment therein. No wise person can be neglectful in the matter of such a harmful and destructive calamity. We should, therefore, try to save ourselves from this and seek refuge from ALLAH. This is a brief account of the four calamities, mentioned in the beginning. Each of these four adversities are very harmful and dangerous in the sight of those wise and knowledgeable persons who are aware of the importance of the reforming of ones heart. Those are the four disease and vices that stem from having pride. How many of us are there that can honestly say, without deceiving ourselves that we are free of this hated ailment? Not many, is the answer. It is imperative that we take heed from this article and we bear in mind the punishment promised by ALLAH Ta’ala to those with pride in their hearts. In a Hadith of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) it is narrated that, “Whosoever has in his heart, even a atom of pride he will not enter paradise.” In observing the above Hadith, it is of utmost importance that we get rid of this spiritual malady, if we hold any illusion or hope of entering paradise. Remember that we do claim to be the followers and believes of Islam and we claim to be Muslims, so how then can we still have pride in ourselves? For the very meaning of Islam is to submit totally and conditionally to the worship of the Supreme Being, ALLAH Ta’ala and as Muslims it is incumbent upon us to get rid of every drop of pride, superiority and haughtiness within us, as we are small and inferior in comparison to the Supreme Being, if such comparison can be made. So lets try and act upon the very essence of our religion and our adjective as Muslims and submit and surrender ourselves to the worship and pleasure of ALLAH Ta’ala. THE DISGRACE OF PRIDE. Imaam Ghazaali rahmatullahi alaihehas written a separate chapter about pride with utmost urgency. He writes, Pride and conceit is one of the diseases of the heart and it is such a critical disease that its cure is very difficult. Pride literally means that one feels great and superior, along with this he looks down upon others in a despicable and contemptuous manner. When this bad habit penetrates into the heart properly, then it effects are expressed by the tongue-that he starts to remark- I am like that and he creates a firm background of his praises and compliments. He also wishes the others praise and eulogise him - the same way when iblees proclaimed, I am better than Adam (alaihis salaam). The second effect is that wherever he goes, he remains in search of honour and high position and he walks ahead of everyone wherever he is. If anyone advises him or directs him towards stopping his bad habits in a correct way, he feels ashamed and disgraced in accepting his counsel. But if he advises or admonishes anyone, he does it in a harsh and cruel manner. If he positively has this belief that he is greater than others, then he will be termed as a mutakabbir(arrogant).Rather on the contrary, he should have the belief that the righteous person is the one who is superior in the eyes of ALLAH taala and this matter will be truly manifested in the hereafter. Instead of regarding himself as superior, he should regard everyone else superior to himself. If he sees an immature child then he should think this child has never committed a sin, and I am a sinner- verily he is better than I .If he confronts an elder, he should think that he has worshipped ALLAH taala more than I, therefore I am no match for him. If he meets an Aalim(scholar) he should think in this manner that he possesses, verily he is superior to me. If he looks upon an ignorant person, he should imagine that he has disobeyed ALLAH on the basis of ignorance and unawareness while I am committing sins knowingly and consciously, so therefore ALLAH has more proof to put me under punishment. Even if the person is a disbeliever you should consider him greater than yourself because you do know what his state will be at the time of death. Numerous Muslims used to look down despicably at Hazrat Umar (r.a) before he embraced islam. These people were unaware and ignorant concerning his fate and the high rank and status which he was to be elevated to. This pride and conceit will not be eliminated from the heart until you do not realise and believe that every individuals position and status is based on and is according to his final hour, and this is a matter of the unseen. It might well be that the person who we regard as pious, his death is a tragedy, while one who we regard as evil, his final moment is so good and he reaches the state of piety. So if a person perpetually has this thought burdened on his mind - he will never have these bad habits. May ALLAH save all of us from this very dangerous disease which is so widespread. Had you given him to drink you would have surely found that with Me. [Muslim] VISITING THE SICK IN ISLAM Islam invites to all that is good and warns from all that is bad. From those good and virtuous deeds is the visiting of the ill and afflicted. When people visit each other in good health, bonds of brotherhood and friendship are strengthened. How then when people visit each other in times of sickness and poor or failing health? Illustrating the empathy that Muslims are required to feel for each other, Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said: “The parable of the Believers in their mutual love and mercy is like that of a living body: if one part feels pain, the whole body suffers in sleeplessness and fever.” [Saheeh Muslim] Visiting the sick is from the clearest signs of such mutual love, mercy and empathy. More than that, visiting the sick is a major responsibility that every single Muslim is duty-bound to fulfill. The Prophet Muhammad said: “The rights of one Muslim over another Muslim are six… When you meet him, you greet him with the salaam (i.e. to say: “As-Salamu alaykum”), when he invites you, you accept his invitation, when he consults you in a matter, you give him sincere advice, when he sneezes and praises God, you ask God to have mercy on him, when he is sick, you visit him, and when he passes away you accompany him (through his funeral).” [Related by Abu Hurayra in Saheeh Bukhari.] In this Prophetic narration) we find that the Muslim is encouraged with concern for his brother in Islam during the three phases of his worldly existence: his health, sickness and his death. Whilst in good health, the Muslim is obliged to greet his brother in faith with the greetings of peace and protection, to accept his invitations and to give him sincere advice. Then, when the Muslim is suffering from a cold, an allergy or whatever else is causing him to sneeze, his brother in Islam is obliged to ask God to have mercy on him. Likewise, when the Muslim’s sickness is such that he is incapacitated, his brother in Islam is obliged to visit him. Finally, when the Muslim passes away from this life, his brother in faith is obliged to accompany his funeral procession, prayer and burial. The great reward awaiting those who visit the sick was spelt out by the Prophet when he explained: “A Muslim visiting his sick brother will continue to be in the harvest of paradise until he or she returns home.” [Saheeh Muslim.] And God’s Messenger of Mercy, Muhammad, also said: “A visitor walking to visit a sick person will be wading in the mercy of God. When the visitor sits with the sick one, they will be immersed in mercy until his or her return.” [Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban] As with every other virtuous deed and noble duty, Prophet Muhammad led by example. He would both make time to personally visit the sick and also enquire after them through others. Whilst in Mecca, for example, a pagan woman was given to throw filth and garbage upon the Prophet whenever he passed her house. One day, the noticeable absence of the Prophet’s abuser concerned him so much that he enquired after her. When he learnt of her sickness, he visited her. She was so taken aback by his merciful concern and that she embraced Islam. “Repel (the evil of your foe) with what is better: then lo! the one between whom and you was enmity (will become to you) as if he were a dear friend.” (Quran 41:34) The learned Companion, Anas b. Malik, also related the following episode from the life of God’s Final Prophet to humanity: “A Jewish boy who would serve the Prophet fell sick, so the Prophet said: ‘Let us go and visit him.’ They (the Prophet and his illustrious Companions) went to visit him and found his father sitting by his head. The Messenger of God said: ‘Proclaim that there is no true deity worthy of being worshipped except God alone, and I will intercede on your behalf on account of it on the Day of Resurrection.’ The boy looked at his father and the father said: ‘Obey Abul-Qasim (Muhammad)!’ So the boy uttered: ‘There is no true deity worthy of being worshipped except God alone, and Muhammad is the last Messenger.’ The Messenger of God then said: ‘All praise is due to God Who saved him from the Fire of Hell.’” [Ibn Hibban] From these two examples from life of the Prophet, we find that it is not a precondition that the sick being visited are from within the fold of Islam. Nevertheless, from these two examples, we find that the act of visiting the sick and suffering, as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad, can be such a touching and moving experience that it might even cure that most fateful of diseases: infidelity. “Indeed in the Messenger of God you have an excellent example to follow for whoever hopes for [the meeting of] God and the Last Day and remembers God much.” (Quran 33:21) The rewards for visiting the sick are great in both number and magnitude. The Prophet Muhammad said: “If a man calls on his sick Muslim brother, it is as if he walks reaping the fruits of Paradise until he sits, and when he sits he is showered in mercy, and if this was in the morning, seventy thousand angels pray for him until the evening, and if this was in the evening, seventy thousand angels pray for him until the morning.” (Al-Tirmidhi) And he, Heavenly Salutations be upon him, also said: “Whoever visits a sick person is plunging into mercy until he sits down, and when he sits down he is submerged in it.” (Silsilah Al-Saheehah) And the Prophet also said: “Whoever visits a sick person or visits a brother in Islam, a caller cries out to him: ‘May you be happy, may your walking be blessed, and may you occupy a dignified position in Paradise.’” [Al-Tirmidhi.] SOURCE: Islamic Morals and Practices Hadith About Feeding the Poor and Greeting People One of the Best Deeds a Person can Do Narrated Abdullah bin Amr: A man asked the Prophet , What sort of deeds or (what qualities of) Islam are good? The Prophet replied, To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not Know (Sahih Bukhari)
