Show your support and solidarity for refugees in Ankara The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees supports the ongoing refugee protest outside the UNHCR in Ankara, Turkey, and asks you to show your demand for the UNHCR to take action to help the refugees. A group of Iraqi, Iranian and Afghan refugees, including families and young children have been protesting outside the UNHCR in Ankara for more than two months now. They have stationed themselves in make-shift camps. For the last five days they have been on hunger strike. Three of them have been taken to hospital for water but they have returned to the strike. They have not been updated on their cases by the UNHCR and remain in a state of constant anxiety, fear and helplessness about their future. Many of these protestors have been waiting for three years for a response about their status; while others have had their case completely closed, which has left them in a state of complete desperation and prepared to go on hunger strike. Some of the protestors’ cases have been confirmed and granted asylum but they have not been given updates on where and when they can expect to travel to their host state. Police in Ankara have put considerable pressure on the protestors to leave on a daily basis. One refugee commented “They have told us that our right to protest has now expired and that we should leave. The police also claimed that the local resident have made complaints about our protests, although, the resident have been really sympathetic to our cause and have brought us food, clothes and bedding to help.” We are asking the UNHCR to respond to our requests: 1. Re-open closed cases 2. Recognize those who are waiting on refugee status 3. Send those who have been granted refugee status to new, safe, host countries.
