فقہ شافعی اور ندوة العلماء از مولانا عبد السلام خطيب بھٹکلی ندوی: alsharia.org/mujalla/2013/nov/fiqh-shafi-abdussalam-nadvi Mol Abdus Salam was one of my closest teachers at the Nadwa, he was supervisor for us foreign students. He taught me Mishkat vol 1 and I studied the chapters related to family law in Fiqh Shafi with him. We read through parts of Reliance of the Traveller too. Reading Hadith with him has been life changing. It put us Hanafi students in place who are all too used to hearing Hanafi supremacist arguments and Shafii batterings. Of course I used to attend his lessons fully prepared and ready to debate but he was always able to answer my objections to the Shafii positions much to my dislike! He wasnt bigoted in his Shafii opinions either and would have no qualms in following a non-shafii position he found stronger, always citing his reasons. After all, he is a student of Sheikh Yunus and had stayed in his khidmah too. It would not be an overstatement to say Mol is largely responsible for taking the Hanafi bigotry out of me, enduring my bias and always urging me to read more around the subject matter. Outside of class, I was most fortunate in studying Mishkat by his side at the library. Every evening I would sit on the side of his desk and would simply turn my book around so that it was facing him whenever I came across a section that I couldnt understand. He would never refuse and give generous remarks. Even after library time (library used to shut at 11pm), he would give me all the time I required in understanding the lesson and texts. Before I left he made me a photocopy of his personal Mishkat notes, a culmination of some years. I realise now how fortunate those within the system are (comparatively speaking) and what we took for granted, that I feel this article is worth sharing. I know of no system like this in the sub-continent. May Allah keep Mol well, he is amongst those figures who are dedicated to the institute but have zero fame in or outside campus. May he continue to assist students and be rewarded profusely. p.s. one criticism of the article would be finding no mention of Sh. Abd al-Aziz Bhatkali.
