2:256 There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. Most people only take the first part of this verse and forget the incredibly important matter stated by Allah after. For those of understanding they would notice that here Allah has mentioned a quality or condition of eemanbillah (belief in Allah) and tawheed (singularity) of Allah. Indeed to believe in Allah is to reject that which is held in opposition to him and that is the first part of the testimony the muslim makes several times a day and the testimony by which a man becomes muslim : Laa ilaaha illAllah - there is no God except Allah.
