Minimum Education 3-4 years post-secondary education/training Educational Requirements Entry-level positions clinical engineering positions in hospitals generally require a bachelors degree in engineering with a major in biomedical engineering, or a bachelors degree in chemical engineering, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering with a specialty in biomedical engineering. A working understanding of life sciences and medical terminology is required. Duties and responsibilities The hospital Biomedical engineer works closely with medical professionals (physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians) on the engineering aspects. • adapt computer hardware or software for medical science or health care applications ( develop expert systems that assist in diagnosing diseases, medical imaging systems, models of different aspects of human physiology or medical data management) • ensure the safety of equipment used for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring • investigate medical equipment failures and provide advice about the purchase and installation of new equipment • prepare and present reports for health professionals and hospital manager • supervise and train medical staff and technicians. Specific Duties • Assemble and install Anaesthesia machine and system in the OT • Install Anaesthesia gas system in the OT • Install the oxygen system (cylinder) in the hospital • Install the oxygen compressor system • Install the respiratory machine and system in the Intensive Care Unit. • Perform periodic maintenance check up on all the medical equipment in the hospital • Perform introductional training on all medical machines to the concerned hospital staff • Good cooperation with the hospital staff and procurement department Working Conditions The Biomedical engineer will work on demand to support the hospital set-up, and will be called in case of a sudden technical breakdown. Personal Characteristics Biomedical engineers need the following characteristics: • a strong interest in engineering and medicine • the ability to think analytically and solve problems • the ability to visualize complex processes and equipment • good oral and written communication skills in English • the ability to work effectively with people from various disciplines and educational backgrounds. • performing tasks that require precision • consulting with and supervising others.
