AamAadmi Party commends decision of RTA not to approve fare hike. Will continue to fight for better service for people and push for improvement within PMPML AAP has welcomed the decision of the RTA, Shri Sourabh Rao not to approve the fare hike proposal submitted by PMPML as this will bring relief to lakhs of commuters who use the bus service. It should be recalled that earlier the PMPML Board of Directors, consisting of top officials of both the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations has approved a fare hike ranging from 20% to 60% across stages and bus passes. Over the last few days AamAadmi Party volunteers conducted a signature campaign against the proposed fare hike and got an enthusiastic response from people, collecting almost 5000 signatures from dozens of locations in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. People agreed that a fare hike was not justified since diesel prices had come down and there has been no improvement in service quality. Bus breakdowns, low frequency, crowded and unclean buses were the most common complaints. “Despite numerous statements that public transport is important and must be improved, none of the political parties voiced their opposition to the fare hike”, said Shri MarutiBhapkar, who was part of the demonstration staged earlier this week by AAP outside PMPML office. “In fact all parties in PMC and PCMC have consistently opposed budgetary support for PMPML and labelled it as a “white elephant”. AAP has strongly condemned this attitude by the Corporators who seem to have forgotten that the common man and woman still depend on its service. AAP party volunteers have decided to continue to fight for improvements in PMPML. In the short-term, getting more buses on-road, reducing daily bus breakdowns, and basic services like route sign boards, will be targeted by AAP. They will also demand that the State Govt. should appoint a full-time IAS officer as CMD for a minimum of three years, fill vacant director positions and that PMPML should prepare and publicize a concrete plan of action to improve their efficiency and service quality.
