छठ पर्वको शुभकामना ! Happy Chhath Festival ! May the forces of nature, Sun and Water keep bestowing their kindness upon us. A Vratins holds a basket of fruits as she offers prayers to the setting sun(God Surya) and his consort Goddess Sandhya or Pratyusha (last light rays of the day) in the sacred Bagmati River river at Pashupatinath Temple complex, on the third day (i.e today) of the four-days festival of Chhath, a #Hindu festival predominant to ancient #Mithila region south eastern #Nepal. In another photo, Vratins wait for the first rays of the light or Goddess Usha and Sun god Surya to pay their homage, as they stand in the Rani Pokhari or Queens pond in #Kathmandu, just before the dawn on the fourth day of the festival. [ vratin is one who takes fasting for 36 hrs to pay honor to the sun god Surya and with the belief of the welfare of the family. ] #Chhath festival, which honors #Sun god or Surya Dev and his consorts Usha and Pratyusha is an ancient Hindu festival and only Vedic Festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya and his consorts Usha and Pratyusha. [ Usha is a vedic goddess who symbolize first light rays of the day and Pratyusha or Sandhya symbolize the last light rays of the day. ] Having Four days its own significance, the third day (Kartik Shasthi, accg to Hindu lunar calender) is the main day when the setting sun (God surya) along with Goddess Pratyusha are worshiped and Chhath Puja is performed, similarly the festival concludes on the fourth day early in the morning when fast is broken after worshiping the rising Sun goddess Usha. In Hindu Mythology, both Usha and Pratyusha, consorts of Sun god are the main source of Sun. The Chhath festival is celebrated in order to thank the forces of nature, mainly sun and river for sustaining life on earth and for kindness theyve bestowed upon us, and to seek blessings for the welfare of the family. The occasion is almost a carnival. Houses are decorated with Folk arts like Aripan and Madhubani paintings, Delicacies are prepared, shared in the neighborhood and feasted among the family and folk dances and songs are performed in the evening of Chhath Puja. Besides the Vratins, there are friends and family, and numerous participants and onlookers, all willing to help and receive the blessings of the worshiper.
