होंडा समाचा�र Ending an eight-year-long legal tussle, a Gurgaon court on Tuesday acquitted 62 persons, including office bearers of the workers’ union, of attempt to murder and other charges related to the 2005 Honda violence. The then DSP, Jag Parvesh Dahiya, had been severely injured in the massive strike by the workers’ union of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited (HMSI), which had been joined by workers from other automobile firms in the area. The Gurgaon police had faced flak for injuring more than 700 workers during the protests after a strike by more than 1,000 sacked HMSI workers in July 2005. A violent mob of protestors had attacked Dahiya near the Government Girls College on Mehrauli road. Additional Session Judge Falit Sharma acquitted all the accused as Dahiya, the chief complainant on behalf of the Haryana government, had withdrawn charges filed against them in 2008. The counsel for the workers accused in the case, Rajender Pathak, said that two FIRs had been lodged earlier against the workers under Sections 353 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code. “Following an intervention by the CPI(M) and talks with the PM, the public prosecutor withdrew five cases against workers. Dahiya’s case filed in 2008 booked the workers under Section 307 of the IPC. If convicted, the workers could get life imprisonment,” Pathak added, calling the verdict a relief for HMSI workers and other unions.
