१८ ॐ ओंकारविदे नमः om oṅkāravide namaḥ Salutations to the Knower of Om Salutations to the Knower of Om. Om is the indicator of both nirguna and saguna Brahman. It is the subtlest support to realise Brahman, which expresses in the four states of experience – waking, dream, deep sleep and turiya. This is indicated by the sound symbol Om. The sound ‘A’ represents the waking, ‘U’, the dream and ‘M’ the deep sleep. The silence is the turiya avasthä or the state of meditation. One who meditates on Om gains enlightenment. The Teacher is the support with which the student reaches the state of Om. Pujya Gurudev gained some knowledge of the scriptures from Swami Sivananda, who was his dékñä Guru. However the ultimate Truth was revealed to him by Tapovan Maharaj, for whom he had great reverence. Tapovan Maharaj was the Sadguru, revealing Om, the Supreme Reality. When we develop love and reverence for our Teacher and he in turn has reverence for his Teacher, our love is channelised to the Supreme. It is like a connection or a pipeline. Suppose there is a pipeline passing in front of your house, which reaches Rashtrapati Bhavan. If your pipe is attached to this main pipe, then whatever is sent through that pipe goes to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Directly we may not be able to comprehend the Supreme Reality but we can understand that same Reality in the form of the Teacher. So the love, devotion and sincerity for the Teacher, automatically gets directed to God. The Teacher does not keep anything to himself. It is an electronic transfer, it happens instantly. When we prostrate to an ordinary person, the namaskära remains there. But the humility of a great person is that the namaskära is transfered to the Guru, who in turn passes it on to God. So the namaskära reaches God. Following these dynamics, our emotions and actions get a wonderful flow. Om is a name for the Guru or the Supreme Reality. When we associate with a name associated thoughts come to mind. This itself is our sädhanä. It is an upäsanä. To describe something, we have to use various words but just one name is enough to bring the whole picture to the mind. It is like a password. One name opens up the whole file. If we associate these names with the Reality and understand their meaning, then without any effort meditation takes place. A name taken, consciously or unconsciously brings all the associated feelings to the mind. Chanting the names of the Guru or God is a meditation. Even praying or chanting without full concentration is beneficial. The names associated with Gurudev’s pädukä pujä bring a feeling of reverence to the mind. Sädhanä is the practice of bringing to the mind, the name, along with the associated feeling, again and again. All we have to do is to put the thought into the conscious mind. In time it becomes a part of the subconscious and then no effort is required. Every time we take the name, the mind becomes pure and single pointed. This is dhyäna. Name has an association and when we give up a name, everything associated with that name is dropped. A childhood pet name conjures up associations with that name. When a girl gets married, her name is changed and she acquires a new identity. All past associations are dropped. The new name cannot be associated with her childhood memories. In the gurukula system, when the student went to the teacher, he was given a new name to ensure that old associations and thoughts are dropped. The student is then open to be associated with new ideas and new thoughts. - copied from Chinmaya Mission Delhi
