বার্লিন প্রাচীর ইতিহাসে পরিচিত হয়ে আছে পশ্চিম ও পূর্ব বার্লিনের সীমানা প্রাচীর হিসেবে । ১৩ আগস্ট ,১৯৬১ থেকে ১৯৮৯ সাল পর্যন্ত সুদীর্ঘ ২৮ বছর এটি পশ্চিম বার্লিন থেকে পূর্ব বার্লিন এবং পূর্ব জার্মানির অন্যান্য অংশকে পৃথক করে রেখেছিল । সরকারী হিসাব অনুযায়ী এ সময়কালে প্রাচীর টপকে পশ্চিম বার্লিন যাবার চেষ্টাকালে ১২৫ জন প্রাণ হারান । বেসরকারী হিসাবে এ সংখ্যা প্রায় ২০০। সদ্য প্রকাশিত দলিলে দেখা যায় কমিউনিস্ট সরকার পক্ষত্যাগকারীদের গুলি করার নির্দেশ দিয়ে রেখেছিল । যদিও পূর্ব জার্মান সরকার সবসময় এটা অস্বীকার করে আসছিল ।কয়েক সপ্তাহের জনঅসন্তোষের পর ৯ নভেম্বর , ১৯৮৯ পূর্ব জার্মান সরকার পশ্চিম বার্লিনে যাবার অনুমতি দেবার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় । হাজার হাজার উৎসুক জনতা প্রাচীর টপকে পশ্চিম পাশে যেতে থাকে । পশ্চিম প্রান্তে উৎসবমুখর পরিবেশে তাদের স্বাগত জানানো হয় । কয়েক সপ্তাহের মধ্যে স্যুভেনির সংগ্রাহকরা প্রাচীরটির কিছু অংশ ভেঙ্গে ফেলে । পরে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে পুরো প্রাচীর সরিয়ে নেয়া হয় ।বার্লিন প্রাচীর খুলে দেয়ার ঘটনা দুই জার্মানির পুনঃএকত্রিকরণের পথ প্রশস্থ করে দেয় , যার আনুষ্ঠানিকতা সম্পন্ন হয়ে ১৯৯০ সালের ৩ অক্টোবর। The Berlin Wall was a barrier that existed between 1961 and 1990, constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin until it was opened in 1989.In 1989, a series of radical political changes occurred in the Eastern Bloc, associated with the liberalization of the Eastern Blocs authoritarian systems and the erosion of political power in the pro-Soviet governments in nearby Poland and Hungary. After several weeks of civil unrest, the East German government announced on 9 November 1989 that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans crossed and climbed onto the wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere.
