সূধী পাঠক World of Music নিয়ে লিখেছেন প্রাক্তন ক্রিকেটার এবং লেজেন্ডারী মিউজিশিয়ান ওমর খালিদ রুমি। WORLD OF MUSIC Omar Khalid Rumi In an ever changing world, everything is changing, the cultural scene, media, ideas, growth and manufacturing trend and etc. changing the attitude of the people itself. So it’s natural that the scene in the musical world will not stand still and watch everything changing around it, it is changing too. Music is a culture i.e, it belongs to a culture. So, when the change in culture is effected, ever so slowly, music along with it changes as well. West has changed/developed fast and is still progressing towards a certain direction. We see the changes in the musical world in the west and If we consider the 19th century blues/jazz as the root of today’s music (in the west), then the development/change from BluesJazzBee bop & R&BRock & RollRockPopAcid RockJazz Rock MetalThrash MetalRap and so on took almost hundred years to come to where we are today and it has not stopped there as the new find R&B in a new package and Rap are also progressing towards a no-man’s land. Bangladesh still being in a basic cultural mould is trying hard to adapt to the western creation. We are in a way still trying to pick directions. Unable to avoid the basic cultural tradition vis-à-vis the western influence in our culture, we are caught in between the two and so making an endeavor to create a way/path to express ourselves in our own musical world. Classical, Baul, Marfati, Bhawaia, were our basic traditional music expressed in songs since the 19th century. The growth of the urban areas caused the musical growth and taste to shift towards a more modern phenomenon similar to the west’s Blues/Jazz scene. The medley created soon after, caused it to take a shift towards the west as the western musical instruments as well as the instrumentalists began to influence the artists, musicians and the composer’s in the 20th century. Guitar, Keyboard, Drums, percussions and bass along with the fast growing popularity of the western music penetrated the scene. Bands were formed and they began to perform in front of sell-out crowds. Regular performance in the Radio, TV channels and concerts by these bands became a phenomenon. Suddenly a new horizon opened up for this new brand of music. Western influence on our culture grew even more with this new incursion. Its effect shook the basic traditional approach somewhat and the Baul, Marfati and even Bhawaia found themselves molded and presented in a western fold. The modern popular songs by that time were already in the grip of the latest incursion though. The difference between the western and eastern songs still remained. The music and songs were only being coated with foreign instruments, the basic ingredients remaining almost the same. The Baul and Marfati were given dent somewhat to accommodate the western scent molding it into a modern version having Drums, Guitar, Bass, Keyboard and Percussions backing all the way, the lyrics and melody lines remaining unchanged. Various bands began performing them. The popular songs were also being remodeled avoiding or leaving the original accent having Harmonium, Tabla and a Violin and incorporating the western equipments/instruments as back up instruments in its place. Many bands were formed and they began to deliver their own form of western music called “Band Music” since Independence. There were some bands before Independence, the real initiators of western music in this country, who had a repertoire of the classical band’s songs and instrumentals of the 60’s. They used to perform in front of a full house those days. The whole scene was carried into the after Independence period when the local bands began to perform regularly in open concerts and hotels. Pretty soon local Bangla songs were also being composed and performed having the western back up. Various bands started to produce their own songs with a popular Bengali root. The western root of Blues, Jazz, Be- bop, Rock& Roll, Rock and so on did not or could not capture the imagination of this genre of musicians so far. There are some bands, though very rare, have come up with some Rock music but most of them still follow the same root. Some are trying to follow the latest “Rap”, though they are very isolated, none seemed interested in Blues or Jazz. Guitarists these days are bent on emulating the great guitarists in the world scene but lacking in churning out good and standard compositions due to the shortage in the knowledge of the basic western root. While the South-east and west Asians are going thoroughly wild with the western root, experimenting and producing world class musicians even the best of them in the world having mastered Jazz, Blues, Rock, Metal and so on, we are still at a nascent stage searching for the light in the darkness. Solution lies in the incumbents urge and perseverance in-spite of all the cultural leash/barrier to open the floodgate. Having talents abound in the country, it would not be hard to grasp the root and meaning of this music to culture and develop it and produce world class artists.
