அன்னை வசந்தை Young Men’s Indian Association founded by Dr Annie Besant the Iron Lady From Ireland in 1914 is observing the centenary this year and am fortunate to head this August body in its Centenary Year. Annie Besant who landed in Tuticorin port in 1893 made Madras her home founded number of institutions, actively involved herself in social activities . She became President of Theosophical society in 1907 gave a call for home rule which inspired many Indians to pledge to fight for Independence. She was President of Indian National congress in 1918 . She worked with Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy the first woman legislator in the country for women upliftment and empowerment. Annai vasanthai endearingly mentioned by Tamil scholar Thiru Vi ka was born on oct first 1847 and her 168th birth anniversary was observed with customary gaiety by YMIA. For the final day on 8th oct Mr Tim Boyd international head of Theosophical society graced the occasion with Mrs Lily boyd. It was a memorable evening of variety entertainment followed by prize distribution to students of schools who participated in various competition. Annie Besant was an eloquent public speaker but unfortunate we could not access any of her recorded speeches. It is possible those days someone could have recorded.
