ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ವ್ರತ ಭಾಗವತ ದಶಮ ಸ್ಕಂಧದಲ್ಲಿ ವೃಂದಾವನದ ಗೋಪಿಕೆಯರು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನನ್ನು ಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಪಡೆಯುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಹೇಮಂತ ಋತುವಿನ ಆರಂಭದ ಮಾರ್ಗಶಿರ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿವರಣೆ ಇದೆ. ತ್ರಿಪುರಾರಹಸ್ಯ ಗ್ರಂಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೋನುಕೂಲವಾದ ಪತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಲು ಹಾಗೂ ವೈವಾಹಿಕ ಜೀವನ ಸುಖಮಯವಾಗಿರಲು ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲು ಮಾರ್ಗಶಿರ ಮಾಸ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತವಾದ ಕಾಲವೆಂದು ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಧ್ಯಾನ: ಚಂದ್ರಹಾಸೋಜ್ವಲಕರಾ ಶಾರ್ದೂಲವರವಾಹನ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀಂ ಶುಭಂ ದದ್ಯಾತ್ ದೇವೀ ದಾನವಘಾತಿನೀ ಮಂತ್ರ: ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ಮಹಾಮಾಯೇ ಮಹಾಯೋಗಿನ್ಯಧೀಶ್ವರೀ ನಂದಗೋಪಸುತಂ ದೇವೀ ಪತಿಂ ಮೇ ಕುರುತೇ ನಮಃ (ಈ ಮಂತ್ರವನ್ನು 108 ಬಾರಿ ಅಥವಾ ಯಥಾಶಕ್ತಿ ಜಪಿಸಬೇಕು) ಗೋಪಿ ಸ್ಮರಣಂ: ಮಾಲವೀ ಸಹದೇವಾ ಚ ನಂದಾ ಭದ್ರಾ ಸುನಂದಿನೀ ಪದ್ಮಾ ವಿಶಾಲಾ ಗೋದಾಮ್ನೀ ಚ ಶ್ರೀದೇವೀ ದೇವಮಾಲವೀ ಶ್ಯಾಮಾ ಸುಪೇಶಾ ಶಾಲಂಗೀ ಮಾನವೀ ಮಾನದಾಮೃತಾ ಇತಿ ಗೋಪಿಕುಮಾರೀಣಾಂ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಶೋಡಷೀರಿತಃ ಪೂಜಾಂತ್ಯೇ ಸಂಸ್ಮರೇದೇತ್ಯ ಪೂಜಾ ಸಂಪೂರ್ತಿ ಹೇತುವೇ (ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದ ಗೋಪಿಕೆಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಹದಿನಾರು ಜನ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಗೋಪಿಕೆಯರನ್ನು ಪೂಜೆ ಸಂಪನ್ನವಾಗಲೆಂದು ಸ್ಮರಿಸಬೇಕು) ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನಾ: ಗೋಪಿಪ್ರಿಯ ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಗೋಪಾಲ ಗೋವ್ರಜೇಶ್ವರ ಗೋಪೀವಸ್ತ್ರಾಪಹರಣ ಗೋ-ಗೋಪಾಲ ನಿಷೇವಿತ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನಾ: ಮಾತಾ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ನಮೋ ನಂದಗೋಪಕುಮಾರಿಕೇ ಕಂಸವೀರ್ಯಹರೇ ದೇವೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣವೀರ್ಯೇ ವಿಂಧ್ಯಾದ್ರಿವಾಸಿನೀ ಏತತ್ತೇ ವದನಂ ಸೌಮ್ಯಂ ಲೋಚನತ್ರಯಭೂಷಿತಂ ಪಾತು ನಃ ಸರ್ವಭೂತೇಭ್ಯಃ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನೀ ನಮೋಸ್ತುತೇ ಈ ಜಪವನ್ನು ಮಾರ್ಗಶಿರ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯೋದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮುನ್ನ ಮಾಡಿ ಸುವಾಸಿತವಾದ ಬಿಳಿ-ಹಳದಿ-ಕೆಂಪು ಹೂವುಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ಗಂಧ-ದೀಪ-ಧೂಪಾದಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯರಿಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ಶುಭಫಲಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. Kathyayini Vrath The Bhagavata Purana in 10th Canto, 22nd Chapter, describes the legend of Katyayani Vrata, where young marriageable daughters (gopis) of the cowherd men of Gokula in Braja, worshipped Goddess Katyayani and took a vrata or vow, during the entire month of Margashirsha, the first month of the winter season, to get Lord Krishna as their husband. During the month, they ate only unspiced food, and after bathing in the Yamuna at sunrise, made an earthen deity of the goddess on the riverbank, and worshipped the idol with aromatic substances like sandalwood pulp, and lamps, fruits, betel nuts, newly grown leaves, and fragrant garlands and incense. She is worshiped as the deity granting boons for blissful marital life and it is believed that if someone vow of fasting, Goddess would give her the husband she would have wished and prayed for.
