ഇന്നാണ് (14 ആഗസ്റ്റ്‌ ) പോലും പാകിസ്താൻ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ ദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. മുഹമ്മദ്‌ അലി ജിന്ന പാകിസ്താൻ ഭരണഘടനാ സഭയിൽ 1947 ആഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 11-നു ചെയ്ത പ്രസംഗത്തിൽ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചത്, ഒരു അഖണ്ഡ ഭാരതത്തെകുറിച്ചുള്ള ആശയം അപ്രായോഗികവും വലിയ വിപത്തു വരുത്തിത്തീർക്കുന്നതും ആയിരിക്കും എന്നാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയെ വിഭജിക്കാൻ മുസ്ലീം ലീഗ് അത്രമാത്രം ആകാംഷ കാണിച്ചിരുന്നു അന്ന്. I know there are people who do not quite agree with the division of India and the partition of the Punjab and Bengal...But the question is, whether it was possible or practicable to act otherwise than what has been done. A division had to take place... Any idea of a united India could never have worked and in my judgement it would have led us to terrific disaster....We should begin to work in that spirit and in course of time all these angularities of the majority and minority communities, the Hindu community and the Muslim community, because even as regards Muslims you have Pathans, Punjabis, Shias, Sunnis and so on, and among the Hindus you have Brahmins, Vashnavas, Khatris, also Bengalis, Madrasis and so on, will vanish...We are starting in the days where there is no discrimination, no distinction between one community and another, no discrimination between one caste or creed and another. We are starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one State. അപ്രകാരം തന്റെ പ്രസംഗത്തിൽ വാചകം അടിച്ചെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു അത് പ്രാവർത്തികമാക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചില്ല. (ജിന്ന പാകിസ്ഥാനെ ഒരു മതേതര രാഷ്ട്രമാക്കാനാണ് ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നത് എന്ന് ചില ഇന്ത്യൻ ബുദ്ധിജീവികൾ പുലമ്പാറുണ്ട്‌ ഇന്നും.) ജിന്നക്കെന്നല്ല മറ്റൊരു പാക് ഭരണാധികാരിക്കും അത് സാധിച്ചില്ല. അതിന്റെ ഫലമാണ് 1947-ൽ പാകിസ്താൻ രൂപീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ അവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന 20 ശതമാനം ഹിന്ദു-ശിഖ് വംശജർ ഇന്ന് കേവലം ഒരു ശതമാനത്തിൽ താഴെ എത്തി നില്ക്കുന്നത്. അവർക്ക് അവിടെ എന്ത് സംഭവിച്ചു എന്ന് യു. എന്നോ മറ്റു മനുഷ്യാവകാശ സംഘടനകളോ ആകുലപ്പെടുന്നില്ല. എന്തിന്, ഇന്ത്യ പോലും അവിടെ ക്രമേണ നടത്തിയ ആ വംശഹത്യയെ കുറിച്ച് തികച്ചും അപമാനകരമായ മൌനം പാലിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
