M7.1 quake strikes off the coast of Fukushima, minor tsunami observed (Kyodo) An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude 7.1 struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture(福島県) early Saturday morning and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued an alert for tsunami of 1 meter high for Japans northeastern Pacific coast but lifted it about two hours later. The agency urged people to stay away from waterfront areas after the 2:10 a.m. quake. The tsunami alert covered Iwate(岩手), Miyagi(宮城), Fukushima(福島), Ibaraki(茨城)and Chiba(千葉)prefectures. It was lifted at 4:05 a.m. A woman in her 60s in Miyako(宮古), Iwate Prefecture(岩手県), fell from her bed and hit her head and back, according to firefighters. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. No abnormality was reported at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant(福島第一原子力発電所),which was crippled by the magnitude 9.0 quake in March 2011, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co(東京電力株式会社)Workers, however, were ordered to evacuate from waterfront. Tohoku Electric Power Co(東北電力株式会社) said no abnormality has been confirmed at its Onagawa nuclear power plant(女川原子力発電所). Evacuation advisory was issued for coastal residents in Higashimatsushima(東松島), Miyagi Prefecture(宮城県), Ofunato(大船渡), Kamaishi(釜石),Rikuzentakata(陸前高田) and Iwaizumi(岩泉) in Iwate Prefecture(岩手県). The agency said 40 centimeter high waves were observed in Kuji Port(久慈港), Iwate Prefecture and Soma(相馬), Fukushima Prefecture. It also reported 30 cm waves in Ishinomaki(石巻), Miyagi Prefecture, and 20 cm waves in Ofunato(大船渡)in Iwate. The focus was roughly 10 kilometers underground in the Pacific Ocean around 290 kilometers east-southeast of Oshika Peninsula(牡鹿半島),the agency said. The quake registered a moderate intensity of 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Fukushima, Miyagi, Ibaraki(茨城) and Tochigi(栃木)prefectures. Tokyo marked intensity 3. The agency revised the magnitude to 7.1 from 6.8. It said the latest quake is an aftershock of the 2011 quake, which triggered massive tsunami and caused nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
