E M B A S S Y RA N G O O N U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell Statement on the Dissolution of the Nasaka Yangon – On July 17, U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell issued the following statement on the dissolution of the Nasaka: “I welcome the news that President Thein Sein has taken action to disband the Nasaka border security force in Rakhine State. I have heard repeated allegations of human rights abuses committed by the Nasaka, violations that run counter to achieving a peaceful, prosperous Rakhine State under the rule of law. “The United States continues to have concerns about the situation in Rakhine State, including the effective coordination of emergency operations in the area, humanitarian access to displaced persons, freedom of movement, accountability, and access to livelihoods and basic services. It is our hope that the dissolution of the Nasaka is followed by an accountable, responsible security force that prevents violence, protects vulnerable populations, and creates a more secure, just, and stable environment in which all communities of Rakhine State may thrive.”
