In contrast to one-dimensional traffic observed in highway scenarios, traffic in urban areas can move in a two-dimensional fashion. The crossing of two different directional flows gives rise to intersections and their control mechanisms which further complicate the behavior of urban traffic. Modeling such traffic is therefore more complicated and difficult than that of highway traffic. In this paper, we employ a powerful Cellular Automata concept to construct an urban traffic mobility model. Based on the developed model, characteristics of global traffic pattern in urban areas are studied. Our results indicate that despite its two-dimensional nature, the inter-vehicle spacing of urban traffic can be approximated by an exponential distribution. We also observe a non-uniform traffic distribution: regardless of traffic density, while some areas are congested others have very low traffic. This coexistence of dense and sparse traffic regimes can be observed globally (over an entire network) and locally (within a small segment of network). These findings provide important insights into the network connectivity behavior of urban traffic which is essential for designing appropriate routing protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks in urban scenarios.
