昔英語で書いた寓話 The frogs in a well an allegory for wisdom In Japan ,there is an old saying .”A frog in a well knows nothing about the big ocean”. Which means “There is no limit to what people will do.” or ”Even the best man meets his match.” It is warning word against to be conceited. 1 Once upon a time. There is an hamlet of frogs in an old well in Japan. They live almost in peace but two frogs. One is smart, knows a lot of traditions from their ancestry. One day the smart frog talks to others boastfully. “The two white fishes those which are swimming in the water in this well, are called carp and their ancestry had had dark color on their body originally. But as time go by they have gone white. because there are little sunshine in the bottom of the well. Little sunshine seems makes them go white. These carps are put into this well by man who own this well and is Samurai. Because if some poison would has been put in this well,the dead body of white carps would float and makes people noticed that this water has been poisoned. ” other frogs are surprised and scared with this story. With looking at scared frogs, the smart frog is amused and hit again. “Out side of this well ,there is scared monster called Snake which eats us up.” The other frogs more surprised and scared. Some of young frogs and tadpoles have got stared to cry. At this time. One frog open his mouth who is always against the smart frog. “you are liar. Why do you have to make others scared? ” he is not smart but hard worker. and he hates the smart frog . Because the smart frog always talking and reading and dosen`t work so hard. “always you are telling to others such a silly story and make other scared. There is no monster called snake and it could never happen that our well has been poisoned.” “you are idiot! this is true the tradition from our ancestry! You are looking down on our ancestry!” “You sham!” and the hard worker think a little and says. ”OK. You say so ,why don`t we get out from this well to check it out. Whether there is snake such a monster or not.” The smart frog shrinks for a moment but says “OK Let`s get out to stick to a pail which would be thrown into the the well to draw water in the tomorrow morning. ” 2 The two frogs are surprised very much. First they have surprised at the brightness of the outside world. And surprised at largeness of the sky and dried earth, many people and their big houses,rice field,grass,big trees,cows,chickens, gentle wind,warm sunshine, many shape of mountains,and hills,big river stream, and their sounds many kind of fishes, and bugs which they could eat.... but they are confused because all those things are fast time to see , they don`t know only even the names for them. the two frogs`s mind has been changed completely. And says “what idiots we are!without knowing about such a huge world, always we compare which is smarter or which is more idiot in the small dark world ! ” and get started to laugh each other like crazy. After for a while one of two tells to another. “why don`t we get back into the well and let them know about this huge world.” 3 at the beginning it was very hard that let others know about outside world for two frogs those who came back from outside. Because nobody know only a word for the things of outside world. They only know words for inside of the well. So two frogs had to gesture to describe for outside. But finally two frogs could tell them about the outside world dimly that they could live in the outside and it could be better condition. Some of other frogs don`t trust two . But some of them get started to say that they too want to get out of the well. At that time, the elder of them prohibit two from talking about the outside for the reason of confusing others. And warns two against talking about the outside again to exile.
