liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/reds-eye-early-deal-origi-8138742 Liverpool FC eyes early deal for Origi after Sturridge setback 19 November 2014 10:30 PM James Pearce Liverpool keen to boost firepower in January and the cost would run into the millions Liverpool will attempt to bring forward Divock Origi’s move to Anfield in the wake of Daniel Sturridge’s latest injury setback. Sturridge is facing another six weeks on the sidelines after scans revealed he suffered a thigh strain during a training session at Melwood. It leaves Brendan Rodgers desperately short of firepower as the Reds enter a critical stage of the campaign. Liverpool signed young Belgian striker Origi from Lille for £10million last summer but under the terms of the transfer they agreed to loan him back to the French outfit for the whole of this season. However, the Reds retain hope that Lille will consider allowing Origi to join them in January and they are willing to pay whatever it takes to make that happen. Agreeing to the loan spell was crucial to Liverpool successfully beating off competition from a host of top European clubs and securing a deal for Origi back in July. But since then, Lille have struggled and find themselves 14th in Ligue One and facing elimination from the Europa League. If their resolve to keep the 19-year-old until next summer weakens, then Liverpool will move swiftly to ensure Origi’s Anfield career begins early in the new year. It could cost Liverpool around an extra £3million. Origi, who has scored four goals for Lille so far this season, made it clear last week that he would jump at the opportunity to join the Reds in the next transfer window but he later stated that he would happily stay put if Lille refused to do business. Is there too much expectation on Divock Origi ahead of move to Liverpool FC? Liverpool enjoy good relations with Lille and don’t want to be seen to be going back on their earlier agreement but the hope is that a deal can be done which suits all parties. Rodgers recently revealed he was in regular contact with Origi and that Liverpool staff analyse each of his matches in France. “We believe Divock Origi will be world class,” Rodgers said. “He has everything: the speed, the profile and he could play for Liverpool now.” Sturridge should be back playing in early January but Liverpool know there are no guarantees he will be able to stay fit for the rest of the season and want to ensure they have adequate cover. Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have all struggled in Sturridge’s absence and haven’t scored a Premier League goal between them this term. Raheem Sterling is the Reds’ top scorer with three but he hasn’t found the net for three months. Losing Sturridge until the new year is a crushing setback ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace. He had been on course to make his long-awaited comeback at Selhurst Park having returned to full training last week. The 25-year-old, who hasn’t featured for the Reds since the win at Tottenham in late August, has already missed the past 14 matches in all competitions. Now he’s set to sit out at least another dozen games, including nine Premier League matches, Champions League clashes with Ludogorets and Basel, and the Capital One Cup quarter-final at Bournemouth. It’s a massive blow for Rodgers, who was hoping the return of Sturridge would arrest the club’s alarming slump. During the last eight league matches Liverpool have played without Sturridge, they have scored just eight goals and picked up just eight points. Sturridge has suffered a new tear to the same thigh he damaged during an England training session in early September. Liverpool also look set to be without Mamadou Sakho against Palace on Sunday. The French centre-back, who hasn’t played since September, has yet to resume full training following a thigh injury.
