What do you mean by saying: You will be free? 34耶穌答覆說：「我實實在在告訴你們：凡是犯罪的，就是罪惡的奴隸。 34Jesus answered them, Truly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave. 35奴隸不能永遠住在家裡，兒子卻永遠居住。 35But the slave doesnt stay in the house forever; the son stays forever. 36那麼，如果天主子使你們自由了，你們的確是自由的。 36So, if the Son makes you free, you will be really free. 37我知道你們是亞巴郎的後裔，你們卻圖謀殺害我，因為你們容納不下我的話。 37I know that you are the descendants of Abraham; yet you want to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38我說的，是我在父那裡所看見的；而你們行的，卻是從你們的父親那裡所學習的。」 38For my part I speak of what I have seen in the Fathers presence, but you do what you have learned from your father. 39他們回答說：「我們的父親亞巴郎。」耶穌對他們說：「假如你們是亞巴郎的子女，你們就該作亞巴郎所作的事。 39They answered him, Our father is Abraham. Then Jesus said, If you were Abrahams children, you would do as Abraham did. 40如今，你們竟然圖謀殺害我──這個給你們說出從天主那裡所聽到的真理的人──亞巴郎卻沒有作過這樣的事。 40But now you want to kill me, the one who tells you the truth - the truth that I have learned from God. And I didnt come by my own decision, but it was he himself who sent me. 43為什麼你們不明白我的講論呢？無非是你們不肯聽我的話。 43Why do you not understand my teaching? It is because you cannot bear my message. 44你們是出於你們的父親魔鬼，並願意追隨你們父親的慾望。從起初，他就是殺人的兇手，不站在真理上，因為在他內沒有真理；他幾時撒謊，正出於他的本性，因為他是撒謊者，而且又是撒謊者的父親。 44The father you spring from is the devil and you will carry out the evil wishes of your father, who has been a murderer from the beginning. He didnt uphold the truth for, in him, there is no truth; and now, when he speaks for himself, he lies. He is a liar and the father of lies. 45至於我，因為我說真理，你們卻不信我。 45Now I speak the truth and you dont believe me. 46你們中誰能指證我有罪？若是我說真理，為什麼你們卻不信我 呢？ 46Which of you could find anything false in me? Then, if I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? 47出於天主的，必聽天主的話；你們所以不聽，因為你們不是出於天主。」 47He who is of God hears the words of God; you dont hear because you are not of God. Who’s Telling The Truth? McCasland During the 2012 US presidential campaign, television coverage of speeches and debates often included “fact checking” by analysts who compared the candidates’ statements with their actual records. Were they telling the truth or manipulating the facts to their advantage? The apostle John recorded a debate between Jesus and a group of people who believed He was making false claims about Himself. Jesus told them, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). They told Him that they had never been in bondage to anyone and asked, “How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” (v.33). As the debate continued, Jesus kept saying that He was telling them the truth (vv.34,40,45-46,51). Some believed Him, but others remained angry at Him and unconvinced. In a sense, that debate goes on today. Those who oppose Jesus seek to discredit His statements and twist them into lies. Jesus says, “I am telling you the truth,” and promises that He will give us a freedom we can find nowhere else. The Bible record of Jesus’ life is worth “fact checking” as we determine who we will follow. All of us have a choice to make. Faith is believing, the promise is true, Trusting in Jesus your strength to renew; Resting so sweetly, secure on His Word, Shielded from danger with Jesus the Lord. —Teasley God’s truth stands any test.
