변이음 : pronunciation rules and changing consonant sounds These rules should be memorized as they will explain pronunciation. In Korean, this is called 변이음 which means changing sounds or when loosely translated it means changing pronunciation but not the writing. It is not the same as 받침 which is defined as the 한글 character in the bottom position.. these are the rules: the disappearing 1.ㅇ [꼬ㅊ]― (꽃이) [꼬치] 꽃을 -> 꼬츨 꽃에 -> 꼬체 뜻으로 -> 뜨스로 굳 + 이 -> 구지 2.경음화 (hardening of the sound) also called 구개음화 ........ this is about ㄷ and ㅌ and they are grouped together here. (should they be?) ㄷ + 히 -> 치 ㅌ + 히 -> 치 but the ㄷ and the ㅌ are still written ㄷ and ㅌ even though they are pronounced as ㅈ and ㅊ. The pronunciation is the right side, the written form is the left side of the following. ㅂ + ㄹ -> ㅁ + ㄴ 협력 -> 혐녁 방법론 -> 방범논 앉는 is pronounced 안는 but I don‘t know the rule. This has to do with 4 consonants occurring. when this occurs, one of them is dropped. Examples: 읽어 일거 없어 업서 앉아 안자 짧아 짤바 ★ⓐⓓⓜⓘⓝ ⓑⓨⓤⓛ★
