변함없이 통일 과업에 열공 중이신 우리 대통령님: 어제 있었던 교황과의 청와대 행사를 보고 느낀 소감이다. 박 대통령은 교황의 방한이 통일을 위한 동력(動力:momentum)이 될 것이라고 말했다. 반면, 교황은 한반도에서의 화해와 평화노력의 중요성을 말하고, 끝까지 인내심을 갖고 상대방의 말을 경청하는 대화의 필요성과 함께 상호 비방, 결실없는 비판, 무력과시 등을 멈춰야 한다는 것을 강조했다. 통일 이전에 남북한이 상호 갖춰야 할 자세를 원칙론적으로 언급한 것이다. 내가 아는 한, 가톨릭의 기본 교리 중의 하나가 화해와 일치(Harmony and Unity)다. 정신적, 영성적 의미에서 그래야 한다는 얘기다. 이런 과정 없는 외형상의 물리적 통일은 쉽게 이루어지지도 않을 뿐더러, 설사 그렇게 된다하더라도 많은 문제를 잉태하게 될 것이다. There will be not any easy unification of 2 Koreas without inner and spiritual reconcilation and efforts aimed at peace in the genuine sense emanating from 2 Koreas. This was what I felt from the event between the visiting Pope and the South Korean President held yesterday at the presidential mansion of the Blue House. The Pope emphasized the patient dialogue attitude without mutual recriminations, fruitless criticism and display of military power, while the President said that the Popes visit to Korea would add momentum to the reunification of two Koreas.
