Greg: Lee Hower penned a great piece about how the overblown perception of startups crushing it, is detrimental to the community and could end up killing new startups. He writes, I’ve met plenty of entrepreneurs who, surrounded by this hype, find it hard to manage when their own startup hits challenges, which are inevitable in any startup (even successful ones like PayPal). If you perceive everyone to be “killing it,” then it’s nearly impossible to speak up as the “only” person that isn’t. I completely agree with Hower and his insights on how to deal with tough times are a must read. At any given networking event, 99% of startups that I talk to say that they are crushing it. However, none of them really are. The very few startups - the one percent - that Ive talked who are actually crushing it, have told me how much of a grind the company is right now, and how theyre deep in the trenches and are digging their way out. That is the definition of crushing it. Chase: It is zero fun when Gomer and I agree, but he is right, this piece is on the money. Lee Hower has been one of the more insightful guys in Boston for quite some time though he doesnt make a ton of noise and Im glad he made this point. Naturally, entrepreneurs need to be optimistic in the face of adversity, but regretfully many entrepreneurs mistake blind optimism - particularly with investors, the press and even employees - as strength which overlooks how to develop real credibility with different key constituencies. There is no one size fits all face that an entrepreneur should put on during good times or bad, but killing it is a term that will make people go numb.
