-- FAN SPOTLIGHT -- We love giving our fans the opportunity to show off their hunting skills. This week were featuring Grant Douglas! A little bit about Grant and his hunt: Game: Whitetail Deer, 240 lbs Location: Chicago Plantation in Hermanville, Mississippi Weapon/Ammo: H&R Single Shot Handi Rifle 35 Whelen with a Tasco 3-9x50 Scope, shooting Federal Premium Vital Shock 225 grain bullets Story: This hunt was special because it was to be my dads buck hunt but he asked the landowner if they minded if I took a buck instead. My dad, my wife and myself were in a 5x8 Antler Shed enclosed box stand. We had waited in the freezing cold for about 3 hours without seeing even a bird. My dad decided to make a trek to our Jeep to gather some coats to help keep us warm, as we were there for the long haul. About five minutes after he left the stand my wife says, Grant, whats that? She then interjected Deer, deer! and I said its a buck Jess, a good one! Jess, looking through her binoculars, says “he has four points!” I say “what!?” “On each side” she corrected. He came out into the old peanut field, right out of an Oak bottom, about 150 yards from our stand. This buck walked about 15 yards and stopped, staring directly at the stand. I studied him for what seemed like an eternity before I decided to take him. I had waited a little too long, buck fever had set in and I could hardly hold my gun steady. I took the deepest breath that I could hold and squeezed the trigger. When the shot rang out and he stood starring, my heart sank. I thought that I had missed my chance and my dads buck hunt was wasted. For some reason, the deer didnt move. He stood there starring straight at us. I quickly reloaded and found the best prop that I could. Calming myself, I put my sights on his front shoulder just below the back and squeezed. Jess exclaimed, Hes down, hes down! and he sure was. I said I hate that dad missed this. Little did I know, dad had made it back just as the buck stepped out into view. Dad stopped just underneath our stand and the buck had stopped to watch him and try to figure out what he was. Not only was my dad the reason I got to go on the hunt, he was the reason that I got my shot. When we picked my buck up, there was no ground shrinkage. He was amazingly huge and fat. He weighed 240 lbs which is huge for any deer in Mississippi. His rack was awesome too, 8 points and a 17.5 inch inside spread and 22 inch main beams. This is a beautiful buck and a great memory that I will hold close to my heart for years to come.
