#15: Film: The Thing Year: 1986 Director: John Carpenter Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 76% The Thing takes us to an unfamiliar ground in horror films, the frozen land of Antarctica where a group of scientists are based out in the middle of nowhere. The story takes off when the scientists find a dog that was being hunted for no apparent reason. The audience then discovers that this dog is no dog at all, but a mysterious alien form. Not only do we know something that the scientists dont, but we also learn how the alien form mimics other living organisms to hide among the scientists and how vile the thing is at doing so. Its an excellent set-up that adds intensity throughout the storyline, anyone could be the thing. The Thing is a film that has a lot show, not only within the film but as a production as well. Because this film was shot at a time where CGI was embarrassing to look at, The Thing utilized plenty of prosthetics and and special effect make-up to try and scare the audience through realistic, gory visuals. For example, the thing is discovered while it is guising as one of the scientists, The thing then rips itself from the body and crawls around as spider-like human head... just check out this film. Oh and did I mention that it stars Kurt Russel?
