*** Eastern Equine Encephalitis News*** From the DofAG: "Two new confirmed EEE cases, both in Cumberland County, have been added to the list today, making #6 and #7 for NC in 2013. Five of the 7 total confirmed cases have been from Cumberland County. Both horses had incomplete vaccine histories (initial vaccination with no booster, repeated over a year ago, etc.) and both were euthanized. Case #6 was a 3 year old Quarter horse mare with onset of clinical signs on 7/30/13 was confirmed by NVSL by IgM capture ELISA, positive at >1:400. Case #7 was a 2 ½ year old Miniature mare with onset of clinical signs on 7/29/13 was confirmed at Rollins by (+)IHC. Another item of interest and concern: this week we had a report of an Emu that was found with clinical signs consistent with EEE – neurologic signs, bloody diarrhea and rapid onset of death. Emus are “virus factories” for EEE and, also being zoonotic, there should special care in handling suspected cases. " "zoonotic" means transmissible to humans. Horses are dead-end hosts, and while the disease is fatal to them, they cannot transmit it to humans, other animals, or re-infect mosquitoes. The disease is harbored in birds (like emus apparently).
