Miyazaki, one of if not THE most brilliant animated filmmakers and modern storytellers, who teaches social-based critical analysis & reflection with respect and dignity, understands whats at stake. From his hard-line environmentalism and anti-Fabian leanings to comparing, in July of 2010, the act of using an iPad to public masturbation, he has painted himself as a Luddite with rigorous creative standards that have resulted, ironically, in his becoming an entertainment icon. Miyazaki well understands that the culture of civilization is irredeemable. In his elder years now, he says: I’d like to see when the human population plummets and there are no more high-rises, because nobody’s buying them. I’m excited about that. Money and desire — all that is going to collapse, and wild green grasses are going to take over. Deep Green Resistance is about early collapse rather than the regularly scheduled program. We want to stop industrial emissions so that as many biomes and non-human species as possible can survive on this earth.
