Congratulations should go to Anne Lonsdale and her staff for the excellent meal provided. Maybe it was the Stag party celebrations taking place in the Club House before and after the game or was it the ground conditions. Whatever, the Otters threw away Saturday’s home again v Tata Steel losing in the final seconds 18 – 19 with a failed difficult conversion. Overnight and morning rain had made the surface greasy and heavy, and in minutes was cutting up making the ball more like a bar of soap. The Otters set off to get an early try but were thwarted by a strong Tata defence. The Otters continued to attempt to play open rugby and many knock on’s were afeature. Again, Adrian Killa opened the scoring with a converted try. Then, a mistake on our part led to the Tata unconverted try. The half time score 10 -5 gave little indication of what was to come except we were playing second half into the wind. Within 5 minutes of the restart, Tata kicked for the corner, a scrum resulting from the lineout infringement and Tata went into the lead, to be followed by an interception try when we tried to open up in mid field led to catch up rugby and perhaps the wrong tactics. A simulated streak by Seimon Griffiths in his Stag attire hardly lightened the tension. We passed up two potentially penalty scores to go for line kicks, in the hope of a successful maul from the ensuing lineout. Also a penalty kick hit the post which may have influenced decisions and in the end led to the defeat. For experienced ex players and supporters in the stand , it was a frustrating situation. However, Tata Steel deserved the win on the day. Later, the Cystic Fibrosis group lightened the scene in the Clubhouse with their doctors, nurses and paramedicl attire. Mathew Davies in his Hospital Doctor’s attire is always likely to lighten the humour. We hope the group venture proved a useful fund raiser. Later a Hen party turned up but by then most of us had headed for home. The bar staff really had a busy time.
