Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren sworn-in as ninth Chief Minister of Jharkhand in the premises of the Raj Bhavan yesterday. Besides JMM, Congress, RJD, independents and others are also supporting the new coalition. With this formation of new government, the President Rule also ends in Jharkhand. 2. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project will start producing electricity within next 20 days as its core gains criticality yesterday midnight. Initially, it will produce 400 MWs of electricity, which will be raised to 1000 MWs after another 15 days. With the commissioning of the project nuclear power generation in the country willrise to 5780 MWs. 3. Shalini Singh, a Deputy Editor withThe Hindu, won the prestigious Prem Bhatia Award for Political Reporting-2013. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) to capture power in Bhutan’s second general election yesterday. PDP is known as an organization whose foreign policy is in alignment with that of the Bhutanese monarchy, which stands for a strong friendship between India and Bhutan. PDP won 32 seats and DPT 15. PDP president Tshering Tobgay (47),who contested from Haa in western Bhutan bordering the strategic Chumbi Valley, is likely to be the next prime minister. 2. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, a former deputy president of South Africa and women’s advocate, as the new head of the United Nations body. Phumzile will be responsible for promoting women’s rights and their full participation in global affairs. 3. ElBaradei sworn in as Egypt’s new vice-president. Prominent liberal Egyptian leader Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in as Egypt’s interim vice president for foreign relations. The appointment of ElBaradei, a former head of the UN nuclear watchdog and a Nobel peace laureate, follows the military overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi earlier this month. 4. Global credit rating agency Fitch has cut France’s credit rating to “AA-plus” from “AAA” due to its uncertain economic outlook amid the ongoing euro zone crisis and the need for structural reform. The outlook is termed as “stable”. 5. Amar G. Bose, the visionary engineer, inventor and billionaire entrepreneur and founder of the Bose Corp., passed away on Friday at his home in Wayland, Mass. He was 83. He became synonymous with high-quality audio systems and speakers for home users, auditoriums and automobiles due to his contribution in the field. As founder and chairman of the privately held company, Bose focused relentlessly on acoustic engineering innovation. 6. Controversial Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, a key figure in the Bofors payoffs scandal, passed away in Milan yesterday. He was 74. With his death the secrets of Bofors scandal for which former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi lost his post are lost forever.
