#SportScience #TipOfTheDay: The only noticeable difference that should occur between your fastest 5KM and Marathon race (aside from heart rate response and pace) is the angle created by your shins. Think of your forward lean as a gas pedal. The more gas you give, the faster you will go. Runners with weak or tight soleus and gastrocnemius (calf) muscles who have difficulty controlling their forward lean have higher injury rates as they rely on longer strides and slower cadence to achieve faster race times. This in turn creates a lot of undue stress on the knees, hips and spine. Ouch! Suggestions: wall pushups to increase lower leg mobility and single leg skipping to help strengthen those calf muscles and increase cadence... think quick feet!
