[TRANS] 141210 - Interview With Together Composer Nam Woohyun Q: From INFINITE’s Nam Woohyun to Actor Nam Woohyun, you are recently showing Composer Nam Woohyun as well starting from “Beautiful,” “When I Close My Eyes,” and now self-composed song “Together.” Among INFINITE’s busy schedule, was there a starting point where you started composing? A: I feel that it is because of the fans that I started composing. I wanted to communicate by making the fans and my story into music to cherish forever, music to listen to forever, and lyrics to read forever. Because the thing that will be left even after I die is music. I wanted to make something to cherish with my fans always. Q: In the movie “Grow: INFINITE’s Real Youth Life” you run off to compose even whilst eating, so where do you usually get your inspiration? A: Usually whenever I think of a melody or lyrics I record it on my phone right then. In the movie “Grow” I suddenly thought of a melody while eating so I ran off to my room. Haha. I usually get my inspiration when I am empty of thoughts. It actually seems to work less when I try to do something. There was a time when I tried to write a song and only sat for 12 hours. Without doing anything. Haha. Q: You even composed the song “Together” in the “Grow: INFINITE’s Real Youth Life” movie. Was there a point where you started composing? A: Ever since debut, I thought I wanted to put our members’ stories into a song at least once. I thought it would mean a lot more if I wrote it during the wonderful time of a world tour, so during the tour I bangkok-ed* in a Bangkok hotel and grasped the melody line and lyrics. This is how the song “Together” came to be. (T/N: ‘bangkok/방콕’ is a pun for ‘to stay stuck within a room’) Q: “Together” is your third presented self-composed song. Is there a special difference from your previously presented songs, “Beautiful” and “When I Close My Eyes?” A: The previous self-composed songs “Beautiful” and “When I Close My Eyes” used a “me” theme and were Nam Woohyun solo songs about my story. In this song “Together” it has a theme of “us” and it is an INFINITE song that contains our story and emotions, so I think that would be the difference from the previously presented songs. Q: “Together” has a lot of meaning because all the INFINITE members came together to make it. Was there a funny incident while writing the song? A: When I write lyrics I first think of things that occurred and organize those into lyrics, so I gave the members homework to write down personal happy memories, meaningful incidents during our time together. Maybe it’s because Sunggyu-hyung is the leader, so his content had that he was proud even just watching us, and Dongwoo’s had a wholehearted story to it. Hoya put in lyrics of our images up on stage, L wrote in our advancement in the future, and Sungjong wrote a diary. Reading the content the members wrote, I could feel the characteristics of the members so it was fun, and it felt like I became a teacher. Q: Is there a reason why you titled it “Together?” A: After the demo I was wondering what title I should rename the file to, but since this was INFINITE’s first song produced together, I sent it to the company under the title “Together.” The company and members all thought the title “Together” fit well with the feel and lyrics of the song, so “Together” became the official title. Q: There must have been a funny incident during the recording of “Together” too. A: During the recording I myself directed and divided up the parts too, and while stressing over what parts would match well I think I gained a lot of understanding of the members’ voices too. I remember scolding a couple members during the recording. I’m extremely serious when it comes to recording hahaha. Q: Who was the member who actively helped you out while composing? A: I am very thankful for Hoya who gave me a lot of ideas regarding the lyrics. He was a lot of help during the organization of the lyrics. Because Sunggyu-hyung’s concentration during recording is so good, he had a good grasp of the song that he only had to sing twice before finishing recording so I was very thankful. Now that I think about it, he lessened my burden by giving me ideas on how to distribute the parts. It was the first time INFINITE recorded a song that I composed but the recording finished well so I’m thankful to all the members. Q: If there is a person you want to be with “Together” until the end, who is it? A: Not a person, but people. You may think it’s [a formal answer], but I want to be with INFINITE members and fans.
