„The dog, this flower in John’s life and not at all an irksome - TopicsExpress

„The dog, this flower in John’s life and not at all an irksome burden, slept. It, the huge white beast, slept in front of the fireplace, slept a relaxing sleep. It was raining, while John drank his second coffee, as tasty as a sunny day on the beach and not at all as distractive as the honk of a car in the darkest night. ‘Ding Dong,’ the doorbell rang. ‘Mary?’” The example above, this application of two figures of speech (metaphor and antithesis) provide some insights, explain what is meant, and pave the way for new considerations (at least for me). Furthermore, it might be that contradictory metaphorical statements, i.e. metaphorical antitheses, challenge the reader’s mind, as it juxtaposes two contradictory “objects”. The reader’s mind is challenged by an overwhelming statement and thus comprehension is affected. This is difficult for the receiver but often worthwhile. Worthwhile is it if words are used to defend, to defend ones one position. Inspired was this consideration by reading, once again, Sun Tzu, The Art of War.
