“The greatest threat today to intelligent coverage of foreign - TopicsExpress

“The greatest threat today to intelligent coverage of foreign news is not so much a lack of interest as it is a concentration of ownership that is profit-driven and a lack of inclination to meet responsibilities, except that of the bottom line.” I dont know how to feel about this quote, because in the end, it doesnt seem to account for - or assign blame to- “compassion fatigue’- to the media themselves, or to an uninterested audience. Newsweeklies sell fewer newsstand copies when they do foreign events; among The Times ten worst-selling cover stories since 1980 are features on Bosnia and Somalia. Maybe it is not just the media that needs to take the blame in the distortion of foreign news, so much as us -the people- ourselves. Yes, I am partly exonerating the media. The media excuse gets tiresome. What about the “compassion avoidance” orchestrated by the public?
