“Window On The Word”: Read Luke 7:11-17.This passage of Scripture records Jesus exercising authority over humanitys most dreaded event, the onset of death. Death terminates the life of every individual in this world and ends the most intimate of relationships. There are no situations so filled with loss, grief and hopelessness as when death touches a family....That is unless Jesus shows up. When Jesus shows up He makes all the difference now and for eternity. The situation Jesus encountered with the grieving widow has a lot of similarities with circumstances we face at the time of death. (1) It was a time of desperate need (vs. 12). A widow with no children meant she was left to fend for herself with no legal rights in a mans world. She was helpless and defenseless in a society that pretended to have compassion for the weak and defenseless, but in real practice, the underprivileged were exploited and oppressed. If you have ever been thrust into a circumstance where you experienced pain of soul and placed you in a position where you were taken advantage of by people in power, then you know something of what this widow was going through. (2) It was time for decisive intervention (vs. 13-15). In a moment, the Lord of life confronts death, and , at the same time, the desperation into which this widow was plunged. Jesus intervened with compassion, and with power to raise her son from the dead and restore him to her. Has Jesus ever given something back to you that you thought was dead and gone? A love? A cherished relationship? Your health? If so, you know a little of what this mother experienced. (3) I was time for a distinctive reaction (vs.16-17). Jesus work in the life of a person produces a reaction from people witnessing the difference He makes. Some reacted in fear, others glorified God. What Jesus did revealed the power of God at work in their midst controlling circumstances that reversed the very laws of life and death. God has visited his people. It means, God has showed up with the expressed purpose of helping, not cursing. Jesus underscores Gods concern and compassion in reaction to peoples deepest needs. If you have witnessed or experienced the Lords compassionate reaction to some need, then you know something powerful in this world. Furthermore, you can participate in Gods power at work in the world. Think about it. Have a Great Day, and spread the Word!
