*fanfare! Today sees the launch of our #arthappens project - an online crowdfunding campaign hosted by The Art Fund We’re aiming to raise £14,500 in just over three months to re-gild the 350 year old frame of one of Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallerys rarest and most famous works – The Paston Treasure Commissioned by Sir Robert Paston in the mid 17th century, the painting is full of wondrous objects and layers of meaning and is an extremely rare depiction of an English ‘schatzkammer’ or cabinet of treasures. The painting itself was recently conserved but we need your help to return the ornate frame back to its former glory – gilded with pure gold. In return for your valued support, you’ll receive an exclusive reward ranging from postcards to tote bags and behind-the-scenes access. Unsure of what crowdfunding is? Paul Smyth, Chairman of the Communities Committee at Norfolk County Council, said: “Crowdfunding provides a novel and voluntary way for people to directly support causes or projects they want to help. As the Paston Treasure painting is a much-loved masterpiece and an intrinsic part of Norfolks heritage, we hope this restoration project will attract lots of support ahead of the major exhibition planned for 2018. In 2018 we’re planning to stage a major exhibition in partnership with the Yale Center for British Art in the United States, reuniting as many of the Paston treasures as possible with the painting. This will be the first time they’ll have been displayed together in over 350 years - we’d love for the frame to look as Sir Robert himself would have seen it! Over the coming months we’ll be letting you in on the secrets held within this magnificent painting, keeping you up to date with our progress and asking you to share the news with your friends. Remember, with you, #arthappens
