1:30am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. Cass and I run out of smokes so we take a quick bike ride down to our nearest 24hr convenience store which happens to be Racetrack on Rufe Snow. As we go inside we noticed the two police officers parked next to each other talking so I figure they are waiting for the bar to close a few businesses down from where we are at. Go in, buy smokes and a drink, walk out and proceed to pedal away towards home. Low and behold those red and blues start flashing away on the street next to us. We stop and begin discussion. Mind you we were riding on the sidewalk and using crossing signals. Not only do the officers stop us, check out names for warrants, question us about the nature of our bike ride, make comments about how expensive our bikes look and if they are stolen, but they also have the nerve to search me. And we are not talking about emptying my pockets, we are talking legs apart-locked hands on head-touch my unit 6or7 times kind of search. They proceed to explain we were pulled over for not having lights on the front of our bikes. Apparently this is such a horrid offense that it took 2 cops to stop us and deal with the situation while completely ignoring the obvious drunk drivers we see leaving the bar at closing time. While I can agree that yes there is a law stating bikes being ridden at night need a headlamp and either a tail light or red reflector in the back, Im pretty positive this law was created for people riding bikes on the road with vehicles not on the sidewalk as we were. Officers like this give them all a bad image.
