1 year ago today, in a dimly lit room in an unassuming building in Hefei, China, we became a family. She was taller than I thought she would be, much thinner too. She let only 1 tear fall choosing instead to act stoic, silly and sometimes defiant to hide what she really felt. Truth be told, some of these photos are hard to look at. Knowing her like I do now I can see everything she couldnt voice. Its heartbreaking, serving to remind me (once again) that adoption always begins with loss. This last year has been so hard and so good. We have shared some of those struggles and many of those triumphs. Of course, there are things we have kept private, things we have navigated alone and rejoiced in alone. Today, Lily is fiercely bonded with her sister. She loves her brother and is learning to trust her mama and baba more and more with her heart. There has been grief and joy and some hard truths, all in the last few weeks. She has embraced her extended family and they have embraced her. She has woven herself into their hearts as if she has always been here. She is also wicked smart. Not only has she caught up with her peers in school, just this week she has started surpassing some of them. She is quick to help and is eager to learn how to make friends. I am truly in awe of this child and how far she has come in such a short time. We are honored to call her daughter and come along side her in this life! Wo ai ni Xu Xing Hua.
