10/24/14 In continuing with fire safety among our children, the Northport Volunteer Fire Department held its annual open house and poster contest for the children in our elementary schools. Children and their parents were able to tour the fire house, explore the fire engines, tour the Advanced Life Support Ambulance and walk through the heavy rescue truck. To add to the excitement of the evening a demonstration was held in the back of the fire house showing how Smoke detectors can save lives in a fast moving fire. Narrated by Ex-Chief John McKenna and under the command of Engine Company Captain William Forster, Firefighters Sean Sheridan and William Sherer set fire to a mock living room, showed how fast fire can spread, demonstrated the sensitivity of smoke alarms and then proceed to extinguish the fire after four evolutions. The kids and their parents then proceeded to the firemans hall where they were greeted by fire safety education chairman James Mahoney. A short film was viewed on fire safety and the winners of the poster contest received there award from Mr. Mahoney, Chief Pansini, Chief Wine, and a favorite of all, SPARKEY the fire prevention dog. As always, the ladies auxiliary were the hostess for the evening and had an ample supply of refreshments for all the guests. Below is a video of the fire and the narration.
