10 May 2012 Shanie Kerrigan *Keep an eye on the manager, Brick had said yesterday, and so that was just what I’d done. I hadn’t really paid much attention to him before. He was hardly ever at Peril outside of opening hours, and, for a manager, didn’t seem interested in the operational side of the club at all. He left most of it to his second in command, the bar manager, only ever stepping in when it came to hiring new staff. And then it would only be to veto a girl he didn’t think ‘suited’ the club, which, in other words, meant that she wasn’t his idea of good looking. Other than balancing the take at the end of each night, he did very little else, spending most of his time propping up the bar and leering at the female staff and patrons. He never paid much attention to me though, not after that first day anyway. But then again, that may have something to do with what I’d said I’d do to him if he touched me again.* *Shaking my head, I’d watched from my booth last night as he tallied the waitresses’ receipts, and noticed that every so often he seemed to pocket one, or tuck it into a different part of his files. Ok, so from across the club, it may just have been a trick of the light, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The dick was skimming the profits! No-one on his salary should be able to afford the designer label clothes he pranced around in, or the fancy sports car that he treated better than any woman I’d seen him come across.* *The thought that someone was taking the boss for a ride, especially right now when there was so obviously a ton of other shit going on for him, had made my hackles rise. He’d been good to me, and I already thought of him as a friend. And if someone tried to mess around with my friends, they got to deal with me too. My Jaguar had growled long and loud in agreement at that thought. She’d swiped and snarled, wanting at him, but I’d managed to calm her. I couldn’t go to Brick with a suspicion, just half a story, so I’d watch again tonight. But by god if I was right, or if there was more to it, there’d be hell to pay!*
