10 OFFICERS HONORED Citizens Appreciate Police (CAP) is a non-profit organization, that was formed in 1978 by Mayor Bill McNichols and District Attorney Dale Tooley and it recognizes officers that serve above and beyond the call of duty. Since its inception, more than 200 officers have received the CAP award, and on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, Mayor Michael Hancock recognized the ten officers who received the award in 2014. Among those who were recognized were Corporal Doug Grove, Corporal Abel Salas, and Officer Mike McDaniels who helped a homeless mother of six find shelter. Sergeant Chris Hoag was recognized after helping a man stranded on I-25 during post-Broncos game traffic. Also honored, was Officer Dwayne Huddleston, who helped saved a woman’s life. The woman is a severe diabetic, and was found unresponsive in her apartment. Commander Bill Nagle re-rocked an elderly man’s driveway, even after the man rear-ended the commander’s car and he was recognized for his generosity. Officer Florence Nagle was also recognized, as she donates a $300 prepaid credit card every semester to help teachers at the school she is assigned to purchase snacks for the students, and she has also donated stuffed animals to the school. Corporal Joseph Sartain received the CAP award after assisting an at-risk, blind female, with one leg, who is confined to a wheelchair, become financially independent of her problematic family members. Officer Joshua Vasconellos was honored for purchasing two bicycles for children who had theirs stolen. Finally, Officer Tarl Spitzer assisted a blind, homeless man who was abandoned at a gas station by his friends. Spitzer could not secure a space for the man at a shelter, so he took him a to a hotel, and paid for it out of his own pocket. Each of these officers exemplify what it means to be a police officer, and we are proud to have them serving the City of Denver.
