100 years today saw the start of the war to end all wars......if it had achieved that statement, & no more wars had occured, maybe we could justify the sacrifice of 9 million lives......we remember them all...not just the boys who didnt come home, but also the ones who did....who lived to tell the story as it really happened, the mud, the fear...they had to make a friend of fear & mortal terror.... not the glossy version pushed to us by the press of the time, or the painted picture the naive volunteers were given... To both of my Grandfathers who served in the Great War...who both survived....one of them survived the horror of the Somme, only to later be taken as a POW & spending nearly 2 years in a camp....after armistice he worked for the war graves commission for 5 years.....out in the field...locating bodies of tommys who had fallen, & bringing them back to be buried in one of the huge war cemeteries.....when i see these graves...line upon line of them...i think of my Grandad..his small contribution to giving many people a real memorial to grieve...many dont have that luxury. I hope we learn our lessons one day...i really do.
