Romelu Lukaku is not the only Chelsea striker out on loan making an impact. Two divisions below Englands top flight, young striker Patrick Bamford is enjoying the finest spell of his first team career to date. Chelsea signed him on deadline day in January 2012, amazed by his scoring feats for Nottingham Forests reserve side, netting nine goals in one week. He went on loan to MK Dons in January, showing positive signs without being prolific, netting four goals and providing two assists in 14 games. Importantly he did enough for the League One side to want to bring him back. Dons boss Karl Robinson was glowing about making his first summer signing when he sealed a season long loan earlier this summer: Patrick was my number one target and you dont always get your number one target, he is the one I have been waiting for all summer, I could have brought players in over that time, its a risk to put all of your eggs in one basket but on this occasion it was worth the gamble. Into the seasons third month, Robinsons gamble is close to being proved right. Patrick Bamford has 11 goals in all competitions across 15 matches. They sit eighth in the league narrowly outside the play-off places, looking certainties to be in the mix come the end of the season. Bamford keeping up his form will be crucial to that. The Chelsea loanees nine league goals, with the further two coming in cup competitions, makes him the second highest scorer in League Two, one strike off top spot. His performances are winning rave reviews, and he has been working hard on developing his heading skills, scoring a brace against Stevenage from the air, and assisting another. What lies ahead? Well if 20 goals on loan at a Premier League side was not enough for Romelu Lukakyu to get the nod for the first team, a spell in League One wont be enough for Bamford either - and he will be expected to repeat his feats at a higher level. A spell on loan next season at Vitesse Arnhem where six Blues are spending 2013/14? It may be a clever move, the chance for Bamford to play in the top flight of a European league and learn new skills while growing an international reputation. If he continues his prolific goalscoring then when he is put up for loan next season, there will not be any shortage of takers.
