Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?” 3 “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. LIFE APPLICATION: A common belief in Jewish culture was that calamity or suffering was the result of some great sin. But Christ used this mans suffering to teach about faith and to glorify God. We live in a fallen world where good behavior is not always rewarded and bad behavior not always punished. Therefore, innocent people sometimes suffer. If God took suffering away whenever we asked, we would follow him for comfort and convenience, not out of love and devotion. Regardless of the reasons for our suffering, Jesus has the power to help us deal with it. When you suffer from a disease, tragedy, or disability, try not to ask, Why did this happen to me? or What did I do wrong? Instead, ask God to give you strength for the trial and a clearer perspective on what is happening. 2. ★★Devotional 2 of 12★★ Joyce Meyer: Promises for Your Everyday Life A Daily Devotional - Day 201 of 365 October 10, 2014 Take Down the Do Not Disturb Sign Text: 2 Timothy 4:2 AMP 2 Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching. MESSAGE: I frequently stay in hotels during my ministry travels. When I am in my room, I usually put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door so nobody will bother me. Hanging this sign on my hotel room door is acceptable. But putting it on my life isnt. Have you ever noticed that God doesnt always do things on our timetable or in ways that are convenient for us? Paul told Timothy that as a servant of God and a minister of the Gospel, he needed to fulfill his duties whether it was convenient for him or not. I doubt Timothy was nearly as addicted to convenience as we are today. But if he needed to hear that, then Im sure we need to hear it frequently. Its so easy to put a Do Not Disturb sign over our hearts for fear that Gods call will inconvenience us, but we miss out on so many great opportunities when we do this. We need to remember that whatever God asks us to do, its always worth any inconvenience or difficulty we face in the process. And He will always make a way for us to accomplish His will when we are obedient to Him. Prayer Starter: God, I choose today to take down the Do Not Disturb sign over my heart. Even if it inconveniences me, I want to obey You and do what You ask me to do. 3. ★★Devotional 3 of 12★★ KingdomNomics Life that Echoes into Eternity October 10, 2014 Give Your Heart to God Main Text: “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways.” (Proverbs 23:26) Message: As we consider a life guided by the principles of KingdomNomics, we must begin by making sure that we have truly given our hearts to God. Once God has your heart, he is able to guide and direct you in every area of your life. There are many examples in the Bible of God working through individuals who had surrendered their hearts to him. David had a heart that was after God, and God used him in a mighty way. Zaccheaus had a burning desire to see Jesus, and he responded immediately when Jesus called him. Caleb showed faith in the power of God in the face of what looked like insurmountable odds. He followed God wholeheartedly and, unlike most of the others who died in the wilderness because of their disobedience, was allowed to enter the Promised Land. Samuel listened to and obeyed the Lord and as a result was used by God as a prophet and judge to the people of Israel. When God approached Gideon, who was the least in his father’s household, God recognized a heart that would respond and be obedient to him. Daniel’s heart was so committed to God that God felt free to reveal secrets to him. Each one of these individuals had a heart that was fully devoted to God, and all of these people are role models for us today. Their significance in the Bible narrative begins with their relationship with God. Likewise, our significance begins with our relationship with God. When God has your heart, he has everything that relates to you and your life. All of our giving springs out of the genuine relationship that we have with our heavenly Father. As we develop and deepen that relationship, God will work in us and through us. Heart Deposit: Have you given your heart fully to God? Ask him to be first in your life. KingdomNomics begins with a relationship with God. Related Verses: “After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” Acts 13:22 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30 Discussion Question: What does it mean to give heart to God and have you done that as asked above? 4. ★★ Devotional 4 of 12★★ OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL... DATE : Friday 10 October 2014 THEME : IDENTIFYING PRIDE Memorise: And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matthew 23:12 Read: Isaiah 14:12-17 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : 2 SAMUEL 1-2 and PROVERBS 9:13-10:7 Message One of the most subtle and hazardous problems of leadership is the peril of pride. The very fact that a man has risen to a position of leadership with its attendant prominence tends to engender secret self-congratulation and pride which if not checked, will make such a fellow unfit for further advancement in the service of God’s kingdom. Pride is a fundamental sin that aims at enthroning self at the expense of God. Pride was the sin that converted Lucifer from an anointed cherub and guardian of the throne of God, to the devil – the leader of evil and the most cruel and unpleasant spirit. It was this same pride that caused the expulsion of Lucifer from Heaven. Isaiah 14:12 says, “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” Pride is subtle. It is a sin whose presence its victim is least conscious of. This hydra-headed spiritual monstrosity assumes various forms. The most abhorrent of these forms is spiritual pride. Since pride is a subtle sin, how can you discover whether or not you have succumbed to its flatteries? First, spiritual pride manifests itself mostly in Christian service. To identify whether you manifest pride in your service or not, you should endeavour to sincerely answer these questions: How do you react when another person is selected for the assignment you expected? How do you react when another person is promoted and you are overlooked? How do you react when another person outshines you in gifts and accomplishments? Secondly, be honest. How do you feel when others, especially your rivals say negative things about you? Thirdly, submit yourself to the test of criticism. This is part of the price that must be paid daily by a leader. No leader is exempted from criticism. It should be noted that there is nothing else that so kills the efficiency, capability and initiative of a leader as unhelpful, destructive criticism. It tends to hamper and undercut the efficiency of a man’s thinking process. It chips away at his self-respect and undermines his confidence in his ability to cope with his responsibilities. However, criticism is equally a powerful instrument in assessing the presence of pride in a leader’s life. The pride or humility of a leader can be clearly seen in the leader’s reaction to criticisms. To identify the presence of pride in your life, you should ask if criticism causes hostility and resentment in your heart, causes you to immediately try to justify yourself and if you hasten to respond by in turn criticising the critic. Action Point: To overcome the peril of pride, you should be honest and measure yourself by the life of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who humbled Himself, even to death on the cross. Text: Jesus answered and said, ’I thank You, Father . . . that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes’ —Matthew 11:25 MESSAGE: We do not grow into a spiritual relationship step by step— we either have a relationship or we do not. God does not continue to cleanse us more and more from sin— “But if we walk in the light,” we are cleansed “from all sin” (1 John 1:7). It is a matter of obedience, and once we obey, the relationship is instantly perfected. But if we turn away from obedience for even one second, darkness and death are immediately at work again. All of God’s revealed truths are sealed until they are opened to us through obedience. You will never open them through philosophy or thinking. But once you obey, a flash of light comes immediately. Let God’s truth work into you by immersing yourself in it, not by worrying into it. The only way you can get to know the truth of God is to stop trying to find out and by being born again. If you obey God in the first thing He shows you, then He instantly opens up the next truth to you. You could read volumes on the work of the Holy Spirit, when five minutes of total, uncompromising obedience would make things as clear as sunlight. Don’t say, “I suppose I will understand these things someday!” You can understand them now. And it is not study that brings understanding to you, but obedience. Even the smallest bit of obedience opens heaven, and the deepest truths of God immediately become yours. Yet God will never reveal more truth about Himself to you, until you have obeyed what you know already. Beware of becoming one of the “wise and prudent.” “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know . . .” (John 7:17). And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours. Isaiah 61:7 MESSAGE: Yesterday we looked at some outcomes from Christian women’s conferences in Central Asia. When deep issues are discussed and prayed for, and when barriers of shame and dishonour are broken through, there are usually many tears. One participant said, “In fact enough tears have been shed to make many trees grow that we won’t have any desert places left!” As a result of God’s healing movement new initiatives are born to bring healing to abused and rejected women and children in society: ministry in orphanages, to street children and abused children; outreach projects to women in prostitution, safe havens for abused women; involvement in politics to stop legislation on polygamy; preventive health care; teaching on HIV/Aids and caring for patients; involvement in pastoral care, intercession and prayer ministries; ministry to people in prison, etc. There is a desire to not only participate in a conference, but also to use what has been learned and to develop more skills. Three young Uzbek women who had been to a conference before wanted to come back to be part of the prayer team, so that they can learn, and take back the skills to minister to their own women! Others shared that they want to minister to other women when they go back home. Some churches used to have women’s ministry but for some reasons it had stopped. After this training the women wanted to revitalise the women’s ministry in their churches. A speaker at one of the conferences says: “In other countries, we saw Priscilla’s—Christian wives who were standing beside their husbands in loving and serving the Lord. In Central Asia, we not only saw the Priscilla’s, we also saw Esther’s and Deborah’s—women who by themselves are standing strong in their faith and for God. Whether they are single or have an unbelieving husband does not stop them. “The women we have met in that training seem to have Esther’s character: ‘If I perish, I perish.’ They stand up despite the clear warnings of their husbands, neighbours or the authorities. They know the cost. One knew very well that her husband might lose his government job if a family member would be found witnessing for Jesus. She was warned by her husband to tone down her evangelistic zeal. But she could not keep herself from speaking of Jesus. Two others have marriages about to fail if it were not for their enduring stand as wives to keep the family intact. These participants are capable to lead other women even after just the first training. As the women penetrate the walls of shame and break the silence, God fulfils His promise of Isaiah 61:7. Instead of shame and dishonour you shall have a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy! RESPONSE: Today I want to receive a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy from the Lord. PRAYER: Thank You, Lord that You can turn shame and dishonor into everlasting joy! So He began to teach them many things. 35 When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” 37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?” 38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men. ▶KEY VERSE: Let us not grow weary while doing good. —Galatians 6:9 ▶MESSAGE: One of my favorite childhood toys is making a comeback—the hula hoop. My friend Suzi and I spent hours on the front lawn perfecting our technique and competing to see which of us could keep a hoop circling our waist longer. This year I relived that part of my childhood. While sitting in a park, I watched as children of all ages and sizes tried their hardest to keep hula hoops from falling to the ground. They twisted and turned with all their strength, but despite their exertion the hoops landed on the ground. Then a young woman picked up a hoop. With hardly any motion, she moved it smoothly and rhythmically up and down from her waist to her shoulders and back to her waist. Her success depended on strategic movement, not vigorous motion. In our spiritual lives, we can expend all kinds of energy trying to keep up with others in service to God. But working to exhaustion is not a virtue (Gal. 6:9). Before feeding thousands of people with only five loaves and two fish (Mark 6:38-44), Jesus called His disciples away to rest, proving that He doesn’t need our frantic exertion to accomplish His work. The truth Jesus taught His disciples, He wants to teach us: Quiet obedience accomplishes more than wild activity. ▶ Help me, Lord, not to compare myself and what I do with others. May I serve where You want me to serve and do it in Your strength. ▶ I love You and give myself to You. Jesus wants willingness, not weariness. ▶ Insight It is believed by scholars that each of the four gospel narratives was written to a specific audience. In that context, Mark’s gospel is said to have targeted a Roman audience—with a strong emphasis on action, movement, and the works of Jesus, including the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 in today’s text. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:25–26) MESSAGE: Romans 3:25–26 may be the most important verses in the Bible. God is wholly just! And He justifies the ungodly! Not either/or! Both! He acquits the guilty, but is not guilty in doing so. This is the greatest news in the world! “[God] made [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) “By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.” (Romans 8:3) “[Christ] bore our sins in his body on the tree.” (1 Peter 2:24) “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God.” (1 Peter 3:18) “If we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” (Romans 6:5) If the most terrifying news in the world is that we have fallen under the condemnation of our Creator and that he is bound by his own righteous character to preserve the worth of his glory by pouring out his wrath on our sin . . . . . . Then the best news in all the world (the gospel!) is that God has decreed a way of salvation that also upholds the worth of his glory, the honor of his Son, and the eternal salvation of his elect. He has given his Son to die for sinners and to conquer their death by his own resurrection. In the Old Testament, only priests have access to the word of God written in a scroll and read on Sabbaths and other festivities like the Passover. However, today we all have the bible in different versions and languages, we have it in prints, mobile phones, laptops and the likes; this is what the New Testament offers. Hebrews 8:11 “None of them shall teach his neighbour, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord, ‘ for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest of them” It is therefore surprising that a lot of people still operate in the old covenant and cannot seek God themselves by carefully studying the scriptures at all times. They have not recognized they are adopted sons of God who have the spirit of freedom and can cry “abba Father”. It is pitiable that supposed children of God still rely absolutely on a third party to receive information from their Father and remain prone to cheats. Christ had broken the walls of partition between us and God, yet many are erecting new walls, living like strangers and foreigners in their Father’s house and have not seen themselves as fellow citizens with the saints (v.19). Christ gave us direct access to God; invite the Holy Spirit into you and continuously meditate on His words. Maximize this opportunity and let the third party involvement be complimentary. Prayer Point: Almighty Father, thank you for giving me direct access to you through the Holy Spirit; strengthen me to continuously meditate on your words in Jesus name. Amen Food For Thought! “and if children, the heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” Romans 8:17 10. ★★Devotional 10 of 12★★ Bible Verse of The Day. October 10, 2014 Todays Bible Verse: 1 Samuel 16:7 For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. (ESV) ▶ Todays Inspiring Thought: God Looks at the Heart As Samuel sought to anoint Gods chosen candidate to become king over Israel, he favored Davids tallest brother. But the Lord reminded him, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature ... Its our natural tendency as humans to look at a persons outward appearance when judging his qualifications for ministry. But God looks at the heart. Although David was handsome, at that time he was not an impressive figure. He was still a boy. But during those isolated times of shepherding, David was developing a heart after Gods own heart. And this is what caught the Lords eye when he chose David to serve him as king. 11. ★★Devotional 11 of 12★★ Higher Everyday Friday, October 10, 2014 TITLE : ETERNAL EXPECTATION TEXT: “Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:51) MESSAGE: The rapture is the greatest event of all ages that the Church is waiting for. The sudden catching away of all true believers in Christ to meet the Lord in the air is called the Rapture. Christ’s mission will be to resurrect all dead saints, who, along with the living believers will put on immortality and shall be caught up to be with the Lord. It is the eternal expectation of all followers of Christ. At the rapture, all the saints, including the youths, will be transformed into immortal and incorruptible beings. All who died in their sins without repenting at the rapture will face God’s judgement. To partake in this transition, all sinning youths must repent of their sins and embrace Christ as their Saviour. Then as a saint of God, you must live a transparent holy life, watch and pray daily lest that day comes upon you unprepared. Since the rapture is certain, you must prepare to meet your God. ▶ Challenge: Are you ready for the coming of the Lord? ▶ Prayer:O Lord, make me ready for your coming. ▶ Further Reading:1 Thessalonians 4: 13-17 ▶ Quotation:Prepare to meet your God 12. ★★Devotional 12 of 12★★ DCLM Daily Manna A Daily Devotional Guide TOPIC: Give Thanks Friday 10, October 2014 TEXT: LUKE 17:11-19 11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.” Key verse: “And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?” (Luke 17:17). MESSAGE: Those who bear the stigma of HIV/AIDS know the sorrow they go through every passing day even though society has come to realize that not all sufferers came by it through careless lifestyles. Those who have received their miracles from such embarrassing condition know what it means to be free. Likewise, the stigma of leprosy in Bible days was so strong that the victims were isolated from all forms of social associations and interpersonal relationships to avoid any possible contact, because it was a deadly contagious disease. Those who received the divine intervention of being cleansed owed it a duty to give thanks to God. Giving thanks to God for His kindness, mercy and goodness is a function of individual heart’s condition and capacity to reflect correctly. Our text today is an eye-opener to the danger of forgetting to offer praises to God after miracles of healing, deliverance, salvation and breakthrough in life. Ten lepers cried to Jesus for healing and cleansing. In answer to their plea, Jesus sent them to the priest for a confirmation of a gracious healing received. Their miracle was based on the simple principle of asking and receiving. Unfortunately, only one of them, a stranger, came back to give thanks. The rest nine went their ways. Jesus then asked with concern, “where are the nine”? It is common in modern days to receive great miracles of healing, deliverance, provision and escape from danger with an ungrateful disposition. Those who do not sit back to count their blessings will not see sufficient reasons to thank God. Of course, refusal to thank God for all the benefits received does not diminish His divine attributes of showing mercy and compassion on His creatures; yet, giving thanks to God opens more doors of greater miracles and benefits from Him. He that offers praises glorifies God. Grateful Christians grow in grace and understanding. How often do you remember to say “thank you Lord”? Those who have received God’s love, mercy and salvation with other physical and spiritual blessings must endeavour to come back to Him with grateful hearts of praises.
