12 nabbed with charms at the Kisii High Court THURSDAY, JULY 4, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY BENSON NYAGESIBA There was drama at the Kisii High Court yesterday when Bonchari constituents attending the petition challenging Zebedeo Opore as area MP were allegedly found with witchcraft paraphernalia in the court room. Court workers who were cleaning the court room, found the residents rubbing the paraphernalia at the judge’s seat and table. The workers said the residents who had arrived in court as earlier as 8 am gained entry through the judge’s entrance. “I was cleaning the court when I saw the people come in using the Judge’s entrance and started rubbing her chair and table that is when I suspected that something was wrong and informed the authorities,” a worker who did not want to be named said. A team of police officers from Kisii police station led by police boss David Lawendi arrived at the court arrested the suspects. The incident led to 12 of the residents including two women being arrested and taken to Kisii police station. However those arrested denied possessing paraphernalia saying they came early to get sitting space since the court gets full during the hearings. “We gained entry from Judge’s door because court workers and security guards denied us entry through public entrance so that we can get space before the hearing started. We were not having paraphernalia as it was claimed,” one of the suspects said. A sweeper said he saw some smoke near the judge’s seat but it disappeared within minutes after people learnt something was wrong inside the court. Lawendi said the suspects will record statements and warned the residents against engaging in activities that will disrupt the court process. The drama comes a day after Justice Sitati ordered for recount of parliamentary votes cast in 82 polling stations in the constituency during the March 4 elections. Judge Sitati arrived at the decision following an application by petitioner John Oroo Oyioka through his lawyer Gilbert Nyamweya. The incident scared High court deputy registrar Lucy Kaitany among other judicial officers who had arrived to get a glimpse of what was happening. The hearing of the petition delayed for about 30 minutes in what Sitati said was due to the unforeseen circumstances.
