1225 East Mallory In those days, houses were built with crawl spaces that were big enough for the dogs and cats to live under. There were no indoor dogs then at our house. Like many others in our neighborhood, we have a dog. His name was Pest. He was a “Heinz 57” type and very strong. He hated cats. We had a cat named Cat. One day my sister and I got this great idea. We tied Pest to the tongue of my wagon and tossed Cat out in front of him so we could get a free ride. Sis was in front, I was behind her in the wagon. As we had thought the cat ran, Pest ran after her….but under the house! I bailed, sis bailed, and I could hear the pipes of the newly install indoor plumbing clanging against the wagon as the dog barked. The wagon got caught up on the pipes. Of course it was my job to crawl under the house, where all the spiders and other critters called home, and untie Pest, from the wagon. Pest took off after the cat that had already made her escape on the other side of the house. Sister and I didn’t get into much trouble for that because everything still worked and no one told on us.
